Breadth and Volume Improved as Major Indices Rallied

Stocks advanced on Wednesday. The Dow was up 112 points to 20950. The S&P 500 added 19 points to 2385 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 43 points to 5900. The volume totals reported were higher than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by almost a 7-1 margin on the NYSE and by more than 2-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as there were 52 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 22 on the prior session. New 52-week highs expanded and solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the Nasdaq exchange and the NYSE.

PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index posted a solid gain on higher volume. It has been consolidating well above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.

Leadership recently has waned however the major averages' (M criteria) are still in an uptrend.  New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages finished higher after the Federal Reserve increased interest rates for the second time in three months. The central bank raised its target range from 0.5%-0.75% to a range of 0.75%-1.0%. In prepared remarks, Chair Janet Yellen stated “the economy is doing well” as the Fed maintained its projection of two additional increases this year. On the data front, a gauge of inflation showed that consumer prices rose 0.1% in February, slightly above expectations. Separately, retail sales increased 0.1% last month.

Ten of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. Energy was up the most on the session. Southwestern Energy (SWN +5.83%) after being the subject of positive analyst commentary. On the M&A front, MSCI Inc. (MSCI +3.09%) rose amid reports the firm has received a possible takeover offer from S&P Global (SPGI -1.38%). Financials underperformed with Capital One (COF -1.99%) down as reported data showed card-loans declined greater-than-expected in a seasonal downshift.

Treasuries advanced along the curve Wednesday. The benchmark 10-year note rallied 27/32 to yield 2.50% while the 30-year bond surged one point and 7/32 higher to 3.11%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude rebounded 2.4% to $48.84/barrel. In FOREX, the Dollar Index retreated 1% on the session.

Gain Backed By Volume For Best Ever Close

Centerstate Banks Inc (CSFL +$0.39 or +1.52% to $26.11) posted a gain today backed by +61% above average volume and finished at a best-ever close. However, the gain did not clear the a new pivot point cited based on its 1/26/17 high plus 10 cents. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a proper new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Recently it found support while consolidating near its 50 DMA line ($25), and the recent low ($23.80 on 2/08/17) defines the next important near-term support level where further deterioration would trigger a technical sell signal.

CSFL is up +43.5% since highlighted in yellow at $18.20 in the 10/10/16 mid-day report (read here). It was first featured at $15.80 in the 5/27/16 mid-day report (read here). The company completed a new Public Offering of shares on 1/10/17. It was last shown in this FSU section on 2/06/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Found Support Near 50-Day Average Following Offering". Such offerings often help companies to attract greater institutional ownership interest, although they can also hinder upward price progress for a while. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 180 in Jun '15 to 278 in Dec '16, a reassuring sign. Its current Up/Down Volume ratio of 0.9 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under very slight distributional pressure over the past 50 days (I criteria).  It currently has a Timeliness Rating of A and a Sponsorship rating of B.

The Dec '16 quarter marked its 9th consecutive earnings increase above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria), and its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been good. Its small supply of only 49 millions shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
