Leadership Wanes as Indices End Slightly Lower

Stocks finished lower on Tuesday. The Dow was down 44 points to 20837. The S&P 500 lost 8 points to 2365 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 18 points to 5856. The volume totals reported were lighter than the prior session on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership waned as there were 22 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 51 on the prior session. New 52-week lows outnumbered new 52-week highs on both the Nasdaq exchange and the NYSE.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is consolidating near a multi-month upward trendline, well above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.

Leadership recently has waned however the major averages' (M criteria) are still in an uptrend.  New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages declined on the session Tuesday as the Federal Reserve began its two-day March policy meeting. The central bank is largely expected to raise interest rates amid improving economic conditions. Investors will key in on Janet Yellen’s remarks at the meeting’s conclusion Wednesday regarding an update on economic outlook. On the data front, producer prices rose 0.3% in February, above expectations.

Ten of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Energy shares led the losses with Chevron (CVX -1.82%) down Health Care stocks underperformed with Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX -10.07%) sliding with news that Bill Ackman’s hedge fund Pershing Square sold its entire stake in the drug maker. In M&A news, Citrix Systems (CTXS -3.43%) fell amid takeover speculation. Sealed Air (SEE +1.02%) rose on discussions to sell its Diversey Care unit to Bain Capital for up to $4 billion. Shares of Disney (DIS +0.71%) edged higher after being the subject of positive analyst commentary.

Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 7/32 to yield 2.60%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 1.1% to $47.86/barrel, after an OPEC report showed oil inventories continued to rise despite a global deal to cut supply. In FOREX, the Dollar Index gained 0.

Support Elusive Following Prior Demand

Lumentum Holdings Inc (LITE -$1.75 or -3.90% to $43.10) slumped below prior highs in the $44-45 area previously noted as important support to watch, raising concerns. Disciplined investors always limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price. The weak technical action begs a question as to why prior buying demand has not yet returned to show support. Subsequent damaging losses violating its 50-day moving average (DMA) line would raise more serious concerns and trigger a worrisome technical sell signal.

LITE cleared a pivot point based on its 12/09/16 high plus 10 cents when highlighted in the 2/08/17 mid-day report (read here). The big gain and strong finish triggered a convincing technical buy signal. It reported earnings +73% on +21% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarter, continuing its strong earnings track record. However, its rally was short lived and it has given back every bit of its progress since last shown in this FSU section with an annotated graph on 2/08/17 under the headline, "Gap Up Gain and Strong Finish Triggered Technical Buy Signal"

This high-ranked leader from the Telecom - Fiber Optics group has shown sales revenues growth helping it match with the fact-based investment system's fundamental guidelines. Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong, helping it earn the highest possible Earnings Per Share (EPS) rank of 99, well above the +80 minimum guideline.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 266 in Dec '15 to 429 in Dec '16, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. It has a Timeliness Rating of A and a Sponsorship Rating of B.
