Leadership Remains Healthy as Indices March Higher

Stocks finished higher on Monday. The Dow was up 15 points to 20837. The S&P 500 added 2 points to 2369 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 16 points to 5861. Volume totals were higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and near the prior session level on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and nearly 2-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as there were 48 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 27 on the prior session. New 52-week highs expanded and solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange.

Leadership remains healthy as the major averages' (M criteria) have maintained an upward trend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics.  ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages pared early losses and finished positive on the session ahead of President Trump’s speech to Congress on Tuesday. During the speech, investors will look for hints about the administration’s plans for tax reform and deregulation. On the data front, durable goods orders rose 1.8% in January, above estimates of a 1.6% gain. Separately, pending home sales unexpectedly fell 2.8% last month, the lowest level in a year.

Six of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. Energy shares led the advance with Chevron (CVX +1.48%) up after the company was named “Franchise Pick” at Jefferies. Financials outperformed with Bank of America (BAC +1.40%) rising. In M&A news, Kate Spade (KATE +3.57%) rose with news that Michael Kors (KORS +0.80%) and Coach (COH +1.81%) have reached the second round of bidding for the retailer. In the consumer space, Tesla (TSLA -4.2%) fell after being the subject of negative analyst commentary. Shares of Kroger (KR -3.21%) fell amid reports that Wal-Mart (WMT -0.90%) is running a price-comparison test to close pricing gap with Aldi.

Treasuries declined with the benchmark 10-year note down 15/32 to yield 2.36%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 0.2% to $54.07/barrel. COMEX gold fell 0.5% to $1251.90/ounce.

The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.56%) and Bank Index ($BKX +0.61%) both rose while the Retail Index ($RLX +0.24%) posted a smaller gain on Monday. The tech sector also had a positive bias as the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +3.83%) outpaced the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.92%) and the Networking Index ($NWX +0.60%). Commodity-linked groups were mixed as the Oil Services Index ($OSX +1.68%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.69%) both rose, but the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -4.69%) was a standout decliner.

Formed Orderly Base With Earnings News Due After Tuesday's Close

Inogen Inc (INGN -$0.11 or -0.16% to $69.11) endured some distributional pressure today ahead of its earnings announcement. It returned to the Featured Stocks list and it was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 2/21/17 high in the earlier mid-day report (read here). It is perched near all-time highs after a saucer-with-handle base, and it was noted - "Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs coupled with strong earnings may clinch a technical buy signal. Reported earnings +23% on +33% sales revenues for the Sep '16 quarter, slightly below the +25% minimum guideline. Due to report Dec '16 earnings news on 2/28/17, and volume and volatility often increase near earnings news. Rebounded and made gradual progress since dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 10/27/16."

The fact-based investment system calls for earnings per share increases above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) in at least 3 of the past 4 quarterly comparisons. Disciplined investors will be closely watching the earnings news, and more importantly, the stock's reaction to the news. INGN currently has a B Timeliness Rating and a C Sponsorship Rating. Its current Up/Down Volume ratio of 1.1 is an unbiased indication that its shares were under slight accumulation over the past 50 days. The number of top-rated funds owning its share rose from 302 in Mar '16 to 335 in Dec '16, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of 15.4 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

The high-ranked Medical - Products firm makes portable oxygen concentrators for people with chronic respiratory conditions. It went through a deeper correction and rebounded since last shown in this FSU section on 10/20/16 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Rebound Above 50-Day Moving Average Line Helped Outlook". It was first highlighted in yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 9/14/15 high plus 10 cents in 8/05/16 mid-day report (read here).

Y - Was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 2/21/17 high in the earlier mid-day report (read here) and noted -"Perched near all-time highs after a saucer-with-handle base. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs coupled with strong earnings may clinch a technical buy signal. Reported earnings +23% on +33% sales revenues for the Sep '16 quarter, slightly below the +25% minimum guideline. Due to report Dec '16 earnings news on 2/28/17, and volume and volatility often increase near earnings news. Rebounded and made gradual progress since dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 10/27/16." See the latest FSU analysis for more details and a new annotated graph.

Y - Slumped near its 50 DMA line. It was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 1/04/17 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). Subsequent gains for new highs with above average volume may trigger a convincing technical buy signal. Recently wedged to new highs with gains lacking great volume. Found support near its 50 DMA line while consolidating since a big "breakaway gap" on 12/07/16 after reporting better than expected earnings +108% on +19% sales revenues for the Oct '16 quarter. Following its $16 IPO on 10/10/14 it completed Secondary Offerings on 2/05/15, 5/27/15, and 10/01/15. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and a new annotated graph.
