Major Indices Posted Small Gains While Breadth Was Negative
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The S&P 500 rose for a fourth consecutive session, its longest rally since March. The broad index eked out a gain of less than 0.1% to a fresh record high, heading for its fifth straight monthly increase. The Dow added 9 points, still in negative territory for June, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.2% to a new all-time peak. The tech-heavy benchmark has outperformed this month, poised to climb 5.7%. The Russell 2000 lost 0.4%, though still on course for a ninth consecutive monthly advance, its best run since 1983. The volume totals reported were mixed, lighter than the prior session on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by a 6-5 margin on the NYSE and by a 5-3 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 35 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus 25 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices (M criteria) are in an uptrend. Investors are reminded to always make buying and selling decisions on case-by-case basis under the strict criteria and rules of the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index found prompt support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and is hitting new record highs. U.S. stocks edged higher on Tuesday, lifted by strength in tech shares. Eight of 11 S&P 500 sectors closed in negative territory, with Information Technology bucking the downtrend. Morgan Stanley (MS +3.31% after being one of several investment firms to announce dividend increases and new share repurchase programs following last week’s Federal Reserve stress tests. In other corporate news, Moderna (MRNA +5.17%) rose after saying that its COVID-19 vaccine appeared to protect against variants of the virus. Meanwhile, both General Electric (GE +1.55%) and FedEx (FDX +1.33%) caught a boost from separate positive analyst comments. Elsewhere, homebuilders were among the standouts after S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller’s measure of national home prices surged 14.6% year-over-year in April, its largest increase on record since 1988.
In other data, the Conference Board's gauge of consumer confidence surged to a new pandemic-high in June ahead of Friday’s closely-watched non-farm payrolls report. Treasuries strengthened modestly, with the yield on the 10-year note down one basis point to 1.47%. In commodities, WTI crude added 0.7% to $73.40/barrel.

The Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.51%) posted a small gain, meanwhile the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.55%) and Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.52%) both edged lower. Still Sputtering After Damaging Losses Triggered Sell Signal
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Ameris Bancorp (ABCB -$0.74 or -1.44% to $50.68) has still been sputtering after last week's damaging losses triggered a worrisome technical sell signal. A rebound above the 50-day moving average (DMA) line (54.26) is needed for its outlook to improve.
ABCB stalled and raised concerns soon after it was first highlighted in yellow in the 5/21/21 mid-day report (read here) while hitting new 52-week and all-time highs with a big gain clearing an orderly base. The pivot point cited was based on the 3/18/21 high plus 10 cents. The gain and strong close above the pivot point backed by +79% above average volume clinched a convincing technical buy signal, as was shown under the headline, "Breakout to New All-Time High for Another Regional Bank".
Recently it reported earnings +196% on +25% sales revenues for the Mar '21 quarter versus the year ago period, its 3rd consecutive quarterly comparison above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Annual earnings growth has been steady. It has a 97 Earnings Per Share Rating.
It completed a new Public Offering on 3/01/17 and now has 69.7 million shares outstanding (S criteria). It hails from the BANKING - Regional - Mid-Atlantic Banks industry group which is currently ranked 28th of the 197 Industry Groups (L criteria). The number of top rated funds owning its shares rose from 428 in Jun '20 to 497 in Mar '21, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. The current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.0 is an unbiased indication its shares have been neutral concerning accumulation/distribution over the past 50 days. |
