Nasdaq Composite Index Led Major Averages Lower
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Dow fell 23 points, while the S&P 500 lost 0.4%. The Nasdaq Composite underperformed with a 1% decline amid weakness in growth and tech-related stocks. The volume totals reported were mixed, lighter than the prior session on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by a 9-7 margin on the NYSE and by a 5-4 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 32 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, down from 52 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals contracted yet solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices (M criteria) are still in an uptrend, although that trend endured pressure in recent weeks. Investors are reminded to always make buying and selling decisions on case-by-case basis under the strict criteria and rules of the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index has again slumped below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
U.S. stocks closed lower on Thursday as investors weighed inflation concerns against solid economic data. Political updates were also in focus, with the Biden administration signaling openness to a 15% corporate tax floor, instead of the 28% rate previously reported, in an attempt to garner bipartisan support for an infrastructure package.
On the data front, initial jobless claims fell to 385,000 in the most recent week, a new pandemic low and below last week's 405,000 reading. Separately, ADP revealed that private payrolls rose 978,000 in May, well above expectations of a 742,000 increase after April’s 654,000 gain in April. The two updates precede Friday’s highly anticipated jobs reports, which is expected to show 664,000 nonfarm payrolls were added to the U.S. economy in May. Meanwhile, the Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose to a record 64.0 in May from 62.7 the prior month. Treasuries weakened, with the yield on the 10-year note up four basis points to 1.63%.
Six of 11 S&P 500 sectors closed in negative territory. The Consumer Discretionary, Information Technology and Communication Services groups lagged as the oft-cited FAANG group fell 1.3%. Elsewhere, volatility in meme stocks favored by retail investors extended into Thursday, with AMC Entertainment (AMC -17.92%) sliding after nearly doubling in the prior session. In corporate news, General Motors (GM +6.3%) rallied to a record high after the car maker upwardly revised its guidance for the first half of 2021.

Commodity-linked groups were mixed as the Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.92%) posted a small gain and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.09%) finished flat while the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -3.46%) was a standout decliner. Consolidating Above 50-Day Moving Average Line and Prior High
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Brooks Automation (BRKS -$2.61 or -2.60% to $97.77) is consolidating above its "max buy" level. Near-term support to watch is at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($94.92). Any more damaging losses below the recent low ($86.12 on 5/12/21) would raise serious concerns.
BRKS finished strong after highlighted in yellow in the 4/05/21 mid-day report (read here) with pivot point cited based on its 2/12/21 high plus 10 cents. It was last shown in this FSU section on 4/30/21 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Extended From Base and Consolidating After Recent Rally".
It reported earnings +144% on +30% sales revenues for the Mar '21 quarter versus the year ago period, marking its 7th consecutive quarterly comparison above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Annual earnings history (A criteria) included a downturn in FY '18. Its current Earnings Per Share Rating is 95, well above the 80+ minimum for buy candidates under the fact-based investment system's fundamental guidelines.
The Electronics - Semiconductor Equipment group is ranked 57th on the 197 Industry Groups list (L criteria). The number of top-rated funds that own its shares has risen from 454 in Jun '20 to 581 in Mar '21, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Also, its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.4 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. It has a Timeliness rating of A and Sponsorship Rating of C. Its small supply of 74.3 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. Charts courtesy of www.stockcharts.com

Y - This thinly-traded Bank is still perched within striking distance of the pivot point cited based on its 3/08/21 high plus 10 cents. Consolidating above its 50 DMA line ($68.37) where it found prompt support during its ongoing ascent. Subsequent gains above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume are needed to trigger a technical buy signal. Fundamentals remain strong.
