Leadership Waned as Major Indices Drifted Lower
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite drifted from their record closing levels set on Monday, down 0.2% and 0.7%, respectively. The Dow fell 94 points. The volume totals reported were mixed, lighter than the prior session on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by a narrow margin on the NYSE and by a 5-3 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 36 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus 44 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals contracted yet still solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices (M criteria) are still in an uptrend, although that trend endured pressure in recent weeks. Investors are reminded to always make buying and selling decisions on case-by-case basis under the strict criteria and rules of the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index is quietly perched at its record high. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line acted as support during prior consolidations.
U.S. stocks finished lower on Tuesday, as investors assessed a slew of economic data ahead of tomorrow’s Federal Reserve policy decision. Treasuries were little changed, with the yield on the 10-year note holding steady at 1.49%.
On the data front, retail sales fell 1.3% in May, disappointing estimates calling for an 0.8% decline. However, April’s flat reading was upwardly revised to 0.9%. Separately, the producer price index (PPI) jumped a bigger-than-expected 6.6% year-over-year last month, accelerating from April's 6.2% gain and representing the largest increase since November 2010. Additionally, a gauge of homebuilder sentiment from the NAHB unexpectedly fell to its lowest point in 10 months in June. Rounding out the docket, manufacturing and industrial production both increased more than forecasted in May. In commodities, copper prices slid to the lowest level in eight weeks on speculation China may gradually release some of its stockpiles of the industrial metal.
Seven of 11 S&P 500 sectors closed in negative territory, with the Real Estate, Information Technology, and Communication Services groups leading decliners. Energy shares outperformed as WTI crude bucked an overall downtrend in commodity prices, climbing 2% to $72.25/barrel, its strongest level since 2018. Exxon Mobil (XOM +3.69%) rose after being the subject of positive analyst comments. In other corporate news, Sage Therapeutics (SAGE -19.30%)sank as investors reacted to trial data of the company’s experiential depression drug. Elsewhere, Fastenal (FAST -2.22%) fell on the heels of an analyst downgrade.

Financial and Energy-Linked Indexes Rose
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Financials has a positive bias as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.63%) and Bank Index ($BKX +0.53%) both edged higher. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.18%) ended slightly in the red. The tech sector had a negative bias as the Biotech Index ($BTK -1.19%), Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.98%), and Networking Index ($NWX -1.14%) suffered unanimous losses. Commodity-linked groups were mixed as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.49%) fell while strength in energy shares helped the Oil Services Index ($OSX +3.00%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +1.80%) both post solid gains.
PICTURED: The Oil Services Index ($OSX +3.00%) is consolidating after rallying above its March high.

Halted 10-Session Losing Streak Near Prior High and 50 DMA
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Medifast Inc (MED +$2.21 or +0.79% to $282.18) halted its slide with a gain today after 10 consecutive losses with near average volume. Its color code was changed to yellow while testing the prior high in the $279 area which defines initial support to watch above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($272). More damaging losses would raise greater concerns.
MED was highlighted in yellow in the 5/11/21 mid-day report (read here) with pivot point cited based on its 2/16/21 high plus 10 cents. It was shown in this FSU section that evening with an annotated graph under the headline, "Held Ground Following Breakout Gain on Prior Session" Recently it reported Mar '21 quarterly earnings +79% on +91% sales revenues versus the year ago period, marking its 3rd consecutive quarterly comparison above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria), helping it better match with winning models of the fact-based investment system. Annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong.
The Cosmetics - Personal Care firm has only 11.8 million shares outstanding (S criteria) which can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 425 in Jun '20 to 540 in Mar '21, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.1 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days.

A prompt rebound above its 50 DMA line is needed for its outlook to improve. Confirming gains above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume are still needed to help clinch a convincing technical buy signal. Y - This thinly-traded Bank is still perched within close striking distance of the pivot point cited based on its 3/08/21 high plus 10 cents. It has been consolidating above its 50 DMA line ($68.91) where it found prompt support during its ongoing ascent. Subsequent gains above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume are needed to trigger a technical buy signal. Fundamentals remain strong.
