Breadth Improved and Leadership Remains Healthy

Stocks finished higher on Tuesday. The Dow was up 150 points to 20701. The S&P 500 gained 16 points to 2358. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 34 points to 5875. The volume totals reported were mixed, slightly lower than the prior session total on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was solidly positive as advancers led decliners by 3-1 on the NYSE by a 3-2 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 29 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 17 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals expanded and outnumbered a shortening list of new 52-week lows on both the Nasdaq exchange and the NYSE.

PICTURED: The NYSE Composite Index found prompt support after a brief slump below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. Subsequent losses violating the 50 DMA line and latest low would raise greater concerns.

Leadership has remained healthy with regard to the number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs although the major averages' (M criteria) uptrend came under pressure recently. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages rebounded as investors digested optimistic updates on the data front. The Consumer Board Consumer Confidence Index rose to 125.6 in March, the highest level since December 2000. In a separate release, the Case-Shiller index showed home prices rose 5.7% year-over-year in January to a 31-month high. In Fed news, Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer suggested that two more rate hikes in 2017 would likely be appropriate.

All 11 sectors in the S&P 500 finished in the green Tuesday. Financials paced the gains on the session along with Energy and Industrial shares. In earnings, Darden Restaurants (DRI +9.31%) gapped up and rallied for a new all-time high after quarterly results beat analyst estimates. Shares of Red Hat (RHT +5.21%) gapped up and climbed to new multi-year highs following its better-than-projected fourth-quarter revenue and forward guidance. Snap Inc (SNAP -6.80%) fell on news that Facebook (FB +1.03%) will launch several initiatives aimed at direct competition with the recently public company.

Treasuries finished lower with the benchmark U.S. 10-year note losing 10/32 to yield 2.41%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude advanced 1.4% to $48.37/barrel after news of instability in Libya leading to supply disruptions. Gold slipped 0.5% on the COMEX to $1250.00/ounce. In FOREX, the U.S. dollar rebounded from a four-month low to gain 0.6% on the session against its peers.

Rebound After Slump Below 50-Day Average Into Prior Base

Seacoast Banking Corp Fl (SBCF +$0.43 or +1.85% to $23.69) finished near the session high for a 3rd consecutive day. It recently rebounded and closed above the 50-day moving average (DMA) line helping its outlook improve and its color code was changed to yellow. Subsequent deterioration below the recent low ($21.89 on 3/22/17) would raise more serious concerns and trigger a worrisome technical sell signal.

The Stuart, Florida based bank was last shown in this FSU section on 2/13/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Gap Up Gain and Strong Finish Triggered Technical Buy Signal." It was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 1/04/17 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). Its solid gain backed by +234% above average volume clinched a technical buy signal, however it then completed a new Public Offering and stalled thereafter.

The banking firm reported Dec '16 earnings +58% on +27% sales revenues, marking its 3rd consecutive strong earnings increase above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) coupled with strong sales revenues increases. Annual earnings (A criteria) have improved since a downturn and loss in FY '12.

It has earned a Timeliness Rating of A and a Sponsorship Rating of B. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 161 in Mar '16 to 199 in Dec '16, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. It current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.2 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under slight accumulation for the past 50 days. Its small supply of only 40.7 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
