Major Indices Had Another Mixed Session
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished mostly lower on Monday. The Dow was down 45 points to 20551. The S&P 500 lost 2 points to 2341 and the Nasdaq Composite added 11 points to 5840. The volume totals reported were mixed, slightly higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and lighter on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was even on the NYSE while advancers led decliners by a 4-3 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 17 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 24 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the Nasdaq exchange and the NYSE.
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index managed a "positive reversal" on Monday after early weakness and a slump near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
Leadership has recently contracted as fewer high-ranked stocks hit new highs while the major averages' (M criteria) uptrend came under pressure. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average extended its losing streak to eight-straight sessions on Monday, the longest since 2011, as investors weighed the prospects of President Donald Trump’s economic policies. On Friday, Republican leaders abandoned their attempt to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, amid a lack of support from Democrats and even within the GOP. Looking ahead, market participants will shift attention towards other prospects on the Trump administration’s fiscal agenda, including tax reform and infrastructure overhaul.
Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Financials underperformed with Morgan Stanley (MS -2.07%) fell after being the subject of negative analyst commentary. In earnings, G-III Apparel (GIII -14.09%) slid as the company’s revenue came in below Wall Street forecasts. Health Care shares finished higher with HCA Holdings Inc (HCA +5.17%) rising. On the M&A front, Dow Chemical (DOW +1.49%) rose amid reports its planned merger with DuPont (DD +1.23%) has received European Commission approval.
Treasuries finished higher with the benchmark 10-year note up 11/32 to yield 2.37%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 0.3% to $47.80/barrel. COMEX gold added 0.5% to $1254.50/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index fell 0.4%, to its lowest level since November 2016.

Gold & Silver Index and Biotechnology Index Led Group Gainers
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Bank Index ($BKX -0.44%) and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.69%) both finished lower on Monday while the Retail Index ($RLX +0.02%) finished flat. The Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.46%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.32%) both edged lower, meanwhile, the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +1.59%) was a standout gainer. The tech sector was led by the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +1.06%) and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.16%) also inched higher, but the Networking Index ($NWX -0.31%) edged lower. Charts courtesy www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +1.59%) is up from its December 2016 lows, but it has been sputtering below its 50-day and 200-day moving average (DMA) lines. The Semiconductor and Biotechnology indexes have produced greater year-to-date gains and they are growth-oriented groups rather than defensive. A look at the Semiconductor and Biotechnology index charts in the days ahead will show both still well above both their short-term and long-term moving averages.

No Resistance Remains and Earnings News is Due
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Ollie's Bargain Outlet (OLLI +$0.50 or +1.54% to $32.95) was highlighted in yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 2/21/17 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). It was noted - "A volume-driven gain for new highs may trigger a technical buy signal. Due to report Jan '17 quarterly results on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 after the market closes. Volume and volatility often increase near earnings news. Found support near its 50 DMA line ($31.63) during its orderly consolidation. Fundamentals remain strong and its Relative Strength rating has improved to 85, above the 80+ guideline for buy candidates, up from 72 when last noted and dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 1/05/17."
OLLI was last shown in this FSU section on 12/29/16 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Distributional Action Plus Slump Below 50-Day Moving Average". In the interim it rebounded above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line, helping its outlook improve, then made gradual progress marked by occasional volume-driven gains.
The Retail - Discount & Variety industry group has been lagging (L criteria) and currently has a very low Group Relative Strength Rating of only 13. Disciplined investors might look to find more favorable odds by choosing a leader in a high-ranked industry group. Fundamentally, it has a very strong 98 Earnings Per Share (EPS) rating. It reported earnings +55% on +16% sales revenues for the Oct '16 quarter, continuing its strong earnings track record with results above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria) for a 7th consecutive quarter. Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been good.
OLLI was first highlighted in yellow with a pivot point based on its 4/28/16 high plus 10 cents in 7/19/16 mid-day report (read here). OLLI completed its $16 IPO on 7/16/15. It completed a Secondary Offerings on 6/06/16 and 2/18/16. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 98 in Sep '15 to 334 in Dec '16, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 60.6 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
