Indices Were Hit With Distributional Pressure

Stocks finished firmly lower on Tuesday. The Dow was down 237 points to 20668. The S&P 500 lost 30 points to 2344 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 107 points to 5793. The volume totals reported were reported higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, a clear sign of distributional pressure. Decliners led advancers by a 4-1 margin on the NYSE and 5-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership waned as there were 27 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 44 on the prior session. New 52-week highs contracted but still solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the Nasdaq exchange and the NYSE.

Charts used courtesy of www.stockcharts.com

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index had a "negative reversal" for a big loss on higher volume than on Monday's session. Near term support to watch is at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.

Leadership contracted as fewer high-ranked stocks hit new highs while the major averages' (M criteria) uptrend came under pressure.  New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. ThFeatured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.

The major averages experienced their worst session of 2017 as financials shares retreated and investors marked time ahead of an upcoming Congressional vote. Financial shares in the S&P 500 lost 2.9% on the day amid continued weakness in Treasury yields. On Thursday, House Republicans are expected to vote on the repeal and replacement of the Affordable Care Act.

Ten of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 finished the session in the red. In financials, Bank of America (BAC -5.81%) led the losses among large-cap banks while JP Morgan Chase & Co (JPM  -2.93%) also fell. In news concerning Deutsche Bank (DB), the U.S. Justice Department announced it closed a criminal inquiry into currency-trading activities without action.

Materials and Industrials also underperformed while the bond-like Utilities sector was the lone group to advance. In earnings, General Mills (GIS -0.83%) edged lower after the food supplier’s third-quarter revenue fell short of Wall Street estimates.

Treasuries advanced along the curve with the benchmark 10-year note up 11/32 to yield 2.41%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 1.8% to $47.34/barrel despite reports that OPEC countries may extend their deal to freeze production. COMEX gold gained 0.9% to $1245.20/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index fell 0.7%.

Slumping further below its 50 DMA line today amid weakness in financial stocks coupled with a broader market decline. A 3/17/17 loss on above average volume triggered a technical sell signal. Only a prompt rebound above the 50 DMA line ($39.90) would help its outlook improve. It will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight. Repeatedly noted since 1/31/17 - "Recently reported earnings +8% on +20% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarter, below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns."
