Major Indices Rallied For Solid Gains
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
For the week, the Dow rose 2.2%, the S&P 500 gained 1.6% and the Nasdaq Composite added 1.4%. Stocks finished the week on a positive note. The Dow rose 65 points to an all-time high at 22268. The S&P 500 was up 5 points to a record of 2500. The Nasdaq Composite gained 19 points to close at 6448. Volume totals reported were much higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, inflated by options expirations. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by nearly a 2-1 margin on the NYSE but by a narrower 7-6 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 47 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 39 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals expanded and solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows totals on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. The Featured Stocks Page provides the latest analysis on noteworthy high-ranked leaders. Charts used courtesy of www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied for a 6th consecutive gain and a new record high.
The major averages' (M criteria) uptrend endured recent pressure however leadership has remained healthy. Investors should buy stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based investment system on a case-by-case basis as they trigger technical buy signals.
The major averages advanced Friday as investors digested resurfacing geopolitical risks following another missile launch by North Korea and a terrorist attack in London. On the economic front, retail sales unexpectedly declined 0.2% in August versus a projected 0.1% increase. Updates on manufacturing showed activity slowed in the Fed’s New York district in September and industrial production declined 0.9% in August. The University of Michigan’s preliminary sentiment survey showed consumer confidence fell last month.
Technology rebounded from early weakness to lead the market higher. Apple (AAPL +1.01%) rose. Chipmaker Nvidia (NVDA +6.32%) rallied to counter Oracle's (ORCL -7.67%) big loss after lowering its sales forecast. Financials including Capital One (COF +1.7%) rose. Health Care and Consumer Discretionary were the worst performing groups on the session. Mylan (MYL -2.58%) fell. Cruise ship operator Carnival (CCL -4.07%) sank.
Treasuries were lower with the 10-year note off 4/32 to yield 2.20%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude edged up 0.1% to $49.92/barrel. COMEX gold decreased 0.4% to $1320.80/ounce.

Damaging Loss Triggered Technical Sell Signal
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
BioTelemetry Inc (BEAT -$4.40 or -11.86% to $32.70) gapped down today and abruptly violated its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($35.34) triggering a technical sell signal. It will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight. It was repeatedly noted in recent weeks - "Fundamental concerns remain. Jun '17 quarterly earnings rose +10% on +10% sales revenues, its 2nd consecutive quarterly comparison below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Its 50 DMA line defines near-term support above prior highs in the $34 area."
BEAT was last shown in this FSU section on 8/17/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, ".Technically Strong Despite Recent Fundamental Concerns ".It currently has a Timeliness Rating of B and a Sponsorship Rating of C. It traded up as much as +56.18% since highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 10/05/16 high plus 10 cents in the 2/14/17 mid-day report (read here).
Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.4 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 194 in Dec '15 to 283 in Jun '17. Increasing ownership by top-rated funds is a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria, and it has a small supply (S criteria) of only 28.7 million shares outstanding.

Y - Volume totals have been cooling while consolidating near its 50 DMA line ($248) after enduring distributional pressure. Recent lows define the next important support in the $238-240 area. Subsequent violations would trigger more worrisome technical sell signals. Fundamentals remain strong. It has not produced volume-driven gains since highlighted in the 8/24/17 mid-day report - "Subsequent volume-driven gains above the pivot and for new highs may trigger a technical buy signal."

Y - Quietly hovering near its all-time high. New pivot point cited is based on its 8/01/17 high plus 10 cents. Recent gains above the 50 DMA line helped its outlook improve. Subsequent gains above the latest pivot point with at least the minimum +40% above average volume may trigger a proper new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Fundamentals remain strong.

Y - Volume is higher behind today's big gain while rebounding above its 50 DMA line ($36.23) and its color code is changed to yellow. Subsequent damaging losses below the recent low ($34.41 on 8/18/17) would raise more serious concerns and trigger a technical sell signal.
