Major Averages Rose With Healthier Leadership
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
For the week, the Dow was down 0.1%, the S&P 500 added 0.1%, and the Nasdaq gained 0.1%. Stocks finished firmly higher on Friday. The Dow was up 186 points to 20071. The S&P 500 added 16 points to 2297 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 30 points to 5666. Volume totals were lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by nearly a 4-1 margin the NYSE and by nearly 3-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as there were 43 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, more than doubling the total of 21 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals improved and solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange.
PICTURED: The S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index recently found support above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
Leadership remains healthy as the major averages' (M criteria) have maintained an upward trend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The major averages advanced on the session Friday following a better-than-expected jobs report. Nonfarm payrolls climbed 227,000 in January versus a projected 180,000 increase. The labor force participation rate was slightly higher from the previous month at 62.9% while the unemployment rate came in at 4.8%. On the political front, President Donald Trump made public his plans to dismantle the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial-overhaul law.
Ten of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. Financials paced the gains with Goldman Sachs (GS +4.57%). Visa (V +4.59%) was higher amid strong payment volume growth. In Health Care, Amgen (AMGN +5.01%) rose after announcing positive results for a study involving its cholesterol drug Repatha. Technology stocks outperformed with Fortinet (FTNT +13.68%) rose as reported billings were up over 20%. In the consumer space, Amazon.com (AMZN -3.54%) after the company provided disappointing current-quarter revenue guidance. Shares of Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG -4.54%) as comparable-store sales were down 4.8% in the quarter.
Treasuries finished mixed with the benchmark 10-year note up 1/32 to yield 2.47%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 0.5% to $53.82/barrel. COMEX gold ticked up 0.2% to $1218.70/ounce.

G - Reported earnings +43% on -7% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarter. Insider buying reported in recent weeks is a reassuring sign. Churning above average volume while consolidating near its 50 DMA line ($50.14) and recent lows in the $48.50 area. Deterioration below those near-term support levels would trigger technical sell signals.
