Major Indices Sputter With Less Leadership
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished mostly lower on Thursday. The Dow was down 6 points to 19884. The S&P 500 added 1 point to 2280 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 6 points to 5636. Volume totals were mixed, higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and lighter on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by almost a 4-3 margin the NYSE, but decliners narrowly outnumbered advancers on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership thinned as there were 21 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 47 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals contracted yet still solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange.
PICTURED: The S&P 600 Small Cap Index recently slumped below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
Leadership remains healthy as the major averages' (M criteria) have maintained an upward trend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The major averages fluctuated in a choppy session as investors await tomorrow’s non-farm labor report. Economists are expecting Friday’s jobs report to show 180,000 workers were added to the workforce in January. On the data front, initial jobless claims came in at 246,000, below the expected 250,000. Overseas, the Bank of England kept its main interest rate unchanged while revising up its growth forecasts for the U.K. economy.
Six of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. Telecom stocks underperformed with AT&T (T -2.09%) slumping. Financials finished lower with MetLife (MET -5.27%) losing after missing estimates on the top and bottom line. In the consumer space, Ralph Lauren (RL -12.32%) gapped down to new lows not seen since 2010 amid reports CEO Stefan Larsson will be leaving the firm. Costco (COST +3.89%) rose after comparable-store sales increased 7% in January. In Technology, Facebook (FB -1.79%) fell despite the social media giant posting better-than-expected quarterly results. On the M&A front, Mead Johnson Nutrition (MJN +21.41%) rallied amid takeover speculation.
Treasuries finished mixed with the benchmark 10-year note down 2/32 to yield 2.47%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude slipped 0.4% to $53.65/barrel. COMEX gold gained 0.8% to $1214.70/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index advanced 0.2%.
