Leadership Waned and Volume Was Lighter Behind Indices' Gains
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished modestly higher on Thursday. The Dow was up 14 points to 20662. The S&P 500 added 4 points to 2357 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 14 points to 5878. The volume totals reported were lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by more than a 3-1 margin on the NYSE and by more than a 2-1 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. But leadership waned as there were only 12 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 19 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals contracted yet still outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE, but new lows outnumbered new highs on the Nasdaq exchange.
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average has found support above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line during the recent consolidation. Subsequent losses leading to a 50 DMA line violation, or a violation of the recent low, would raise concerns regarding the market rally's health.
Leadership thinned again with respect to the number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs as the major averages' (M criteria) uptrend recently came under pressure. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The major averages advanced Thursday as President Donald Trump is set to begin his two-day meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at Mar-a-Lago. With the meeting, President Trump hopes to set a framework for future relations with China and address the key issues of North Korea and trade. Separately, the Trump administration signaled Thursday it seeks to remove Bashar Assad from power in Syria. On the data front, initial jobless claims came in at 234,000, below the expected 250,000.
Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. In M&A news, Cardinal Health (CAH +2.71%) rose amid reports the drug distributor is near a deal to buy Medtronic's (MDT -0.02%) medical supplies business. Costco (COST +1.81%) rose after the warehouse retailer posted a 6% increase in U.S. same-store sales. Shares of Constellation Brands (STZ +6.43%) rose as full-year EPS guidance came in well ahead of Wall Street expectations. Technology stocks underperformed with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD -6.28%) falling after being the subject of negative analyst commentary.
Treasuries edged lower with the benchmark 10-year note down 1/32 to yield 2.34%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 1.1% to $51.69/barrel. COMEX gold gained 0.4% to $1250.30/ounce.

Extended From Prior Base and Perched Near High
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Momo Inc Ads (MOMO +$1.67 or +5.08% to $34.56) posted a solid gain with near average volume today. It is perched near its all-time high, but extended from the previously noted base. Prior highs in the $27-28 area and its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($28.90) define important support to watch on pullbacks.
It was last shown in this FSU section on 3/07/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Breakaway Gap Followed Very Strong Earnings Report". It was highlighted in yellow in the earlier mid-day report (read here) with pivot point cited based on its 2/21/17 high after a cup-with-handle base. It hit new all-time highs with a big "breakaway gap" triggering a technical buy signal after reporting greatly improved sales and earnings in the Dec '16 quarterly, its 3rd consecutive comparison with very strong results versus the year ago periods. Limited history remains a concern for this Chinese Internet - Content firm that completed its $14 IPO in Dec '14.
A breakaway gap has been repeatedly noted as the one exception where the usual limit can be stretched to allow for disciplined investors to buy as much as +10% above the pivot point. Longtime readers know that the regular limit above the pivot point is +5%. Risk increases the further one chases a stock above its pivot point as it increases the likelihood that an ordinary pullback of -7-8% might prompt one to sell based on the fact-based system's strict selling rules. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 39 in Mar '16 to 97 in Mar '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.9 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. It has a small supply (S criteria) of only 42.7 million shares in the public float.

Posted a gain today with lighter volume. A rebound above the 50 DMA line ($79.05) is needed for its outlook to improve. Sub par earnings increase in Dec '16 quarter below the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) was recently noted as it raised fundamental concerns. It will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight.
