Major Averages End Mixed Facing Threat of Government Shutdown

The S&P 500 rose 0.2% following its biggest drop since May (-2%). The Nasdaq Composite reversed course to end 0.2% lower. The Dow added 90 points. The volume totals reported were mixed, lighter than the prior session on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE while decliners outnumbered advancers by about 5-4 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 22 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page versus the total of 50 on the prior session. New 52-week highs were outnumbered by new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices (M criteria) have seen their uptrend come under pressure, and further weakness may signal a more serious market correction. Investors are reminded to always make buying and selling decisions on case-by-case basis under the strict criteria and rules of the fact-based investment system.

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index slumped further below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line with damaging volume-driven losses.

U.S. stocks finished mixed in choppy trading Wednesday as an early bounce failed to hold momentum. The tech-heavy index suffered its worst one-day performance since March on Tuesday (-2.8%) as growth-related shares have been particularly pressured by a rout in government bonds. Boeing (BA +3.18%) rose on reports its 737-MAX test flight for China’s aviation regulators last month was successful. Uncertainty in Washington continued to weigh on sentiment, with lawmakers working to avoid a potential government shutdown on Friday, while also grappling with a looming debt ceiling deadline.

Treasuries stabilized, with the yield on the 10-year note down one basis point to 1.53%, still its highest level since mid-June. In central bank news, Fed Chair Jerome Powell delivered remarks at a European Central Bank (ECB) panel discussion, reiterating that the supply chain issues fueling global price pressures should eventually abate as the economy goes through the reopening process. In commodities, WTI crude slipped 0.9% to $74.65/barrel after weekly domestic crude stockpiles unexpectedly increased. Additionally, a stronger U.S. dollar weighed on oil prices, with the greenback climbing 0.7% to its highest level since November.

Eight of 11 S&P 500 sectors closed in positive territory, with Utilities the standout. In corporate news, Dollar Tree (DLTR +16.49%) surged after increasing its share repurchase program by more than $1 billion.

Bank, Retail, and Networking Indexes Posted Small Gains

The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.16%) finished slightly in the red while the Bank Index ($BKX +0.35%) and Retail Index ($RLX +0.16%) both posted small gains. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX -1.53%) led the tech retreat while the Biotech Index ($BTK -0.65%) also edged lower, meanwhile the Networking Index ($NWX +0.27%) eked out a small gain. Commodity-linked groups had a negative bias as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -2.44%) outpaced the Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.48%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.28%) to the downside.

Volume and volatility often increase near earnings news. It reversed into the red on 9/28/21 after wedging to a new all-time high.
