Major Indices Are Encountering Distributional Pressure
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished firmly lower on Thursday. The Dow was down 274 points to 21750. The S&P 500 lost 38 points to 2430 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 123 points to 6221. Volume totals reported were higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, indicative of rising distributional pressure. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by more than a 4-1 margin on the NYSE and 3-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 17 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 39 on the prior session. New 52-week lows solidly outnumbered new 52-week highs totals on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. The Featured Stocks Page provides the latest analysis on noteworthy high-ranked leaders. Charts used courtesy of www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index violated its 50-day moving average line and undercut the prior low with big loss on higher volume, ending at the session low. The major averages' (M criteria) prior uptrend is under pressure while leadership has been thinning. Investors should be ready to raise cash and reduce exposure to stocks by selling individual issues on a case-by-case basis as they trigger technical sell signals.
The major averages declined on the session as investors digested heightened tension on the political front. On Thursday, U.S. equities retreated as turbulence in Washington left investors questioning the Trump administration’s ability to deliver on its pro-growth agenda. In economic news, initial jobless claims came in at 232,000, below the expected 240,000. Separately, U.S. factory output slid 0.1% in July, pulled down by a 3.5% drop in auto production.
All 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. In earnings, Wal-Mart (WMT -1.58%) fell despite reporting better-than-expected quarterly results. Cisco Systems (CSCO -4.02%) sank after sales in its key security business declined in the quarter.
Elsewhere in the consumer space, Alibaba (BABA +2.77%) rose as revenue in its core e-commerce business was up 58% year-over-year. Hershey (HSY +1.71%) rose after being the subject of positive analyst commentary.
Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 9/32 to yield 2.19%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 0.5% to $47.02/barrel. In FOREX, the Dollar Index gained 0.1% with particular strength against the euro. The euro declined against the dollar after minutes from the European Central Bank's July meeting showed officials were concerned about an "overshooting" in the currency.

Technically Strong Despite Recent Fundamental Concerns
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
BioTelemetry Inc (BEAT-$0.85 or -2.32% to $35.75) is perched near its all-time high, in technically strong shape. However, fundamental concerns have been raised, as Jun '17 quarterly earnings rose +10% on +10% sales revenues, its 2nd consecutive quarterly comparison below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($32.88) defines near-term support along with recent lows.
Bullish action has continued even though it recently raised fundamental concerns with sub par earnings news. BEAT was last shown in this FSU section on 7/14/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "New Highs on Twice Average Volume; Fundamental Concerns Remain". It currently has a Timeliness Rating of B and a Sponsorship Rating of B. It traded up as much as +49.4% since highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 10/05/16 high plus 10 cents in the 2/14/17 mid-day report (read here).
Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.9 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 194 in Dec '15 to 280 in Jun '17. Increasing ownership by top-rated funds is a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria, and it has a small supply (S criteria) of only 28.7 million shares outstanding.

Subsequent volume-driven gains above the pivot point may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Faces resistance due to overhead supply up through the $115 level.

Encountering distributional pressure since highlighted in yellow in the 7/31/17 mid-day report with pivot point cited based on its high hit on 5/01/17 plus 10 cents. Failed to produce confirming gains since repeatedly noted - "Subsequent gains and a strong finish above its pivot point may clinch a convincing technical buy signal. Small supply of only 6 million shares in the public float (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling."

Slumped below its 200 DMA line ($44.74) with today's loss. It will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight. A rebound above the 50 DMA line ($49.15) is needed for its outlook to improve. Faces some resistance due to overhead supply up through the $54 level.

Most Recent Note - 8/16/2017 5:06:18 PM
Y - Perched within close striking distance of its 52-week high, quietly consolidating above support at its 50 DMA line ($42.87). Confirming gains and a strong close above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal.

Most Recent Note - 8/14/2017 12:40:31 PM
Y - Gapped up today, finding prompt support at its 50 DMA line. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Its latest low ($40.50) defines important chart support where a violation would raise more serious concerns.

Most Recent Note - 8/14/2017 12:27:45 PM
Y - Rebounding above its 50 DMA line ($35.66) today helping its outlook improve and its color code is changed to yellow. More damaging losses below the recent low ($34.77 on 8/11/17) would raise serious concerns and trigger a technical sell signal.
