Leadership Thinned as Major Indices Fell With Heavier Volume
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Dow slumped 533 points, capping its worst week since late January (-3.5%). The S&P 500 fell 1.3%, snapping a three-week stretch of gains with a 1.9% weekly loss. The Nasdaq Composite slid 0.9%, posting its first weekly decline in five weeks (-0.3%). The volume totals reported were higher than the prior session on the NYSE and lighter on the Nasdaq exchange, inflated by options expirations. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by almost a 3-1 margin on the NYSE and by more than a 2-1 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 17 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus 43 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals contracted yet still outnumbered new 52-week lows totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices (M criteria) are in an uptrend. Investors are reminded to always make buying and selling decisions on case-by-case basis under the strict criteria and rules of the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average violated its 50-day moving average (DMA) line with losses on higher volume raising concerns.
U.S. stocks finished firmly lower on Friday as investors parsed Fed commentary for clues into the path of future monetary policy. St. Louis Federal Reserve President Bullard said high inflation may warrant the U.S. central bank to begin raising rates in late 2022, earlier than the Fed’s median projections calling for two rate hikes in 2023.
The U.S. dollar added 0.4% against a basket of its peers, jumping to a two-month high and posting a 2% weekly rally. Strength in the greenback weighed on gold, with the yellow metal extending its weekly drop to 5.8%. Treasuries were mixed, with the yield curve continuing to flatten. The yield on the more Fed-sensitive two-year note jumped four basis points to 0.25%, while the 10-year note rate fell seven basis points to 1.44%. Volatility was likely further exacerbated today, as options and futures on indexes and equities expired in a quarterly event known as “triple witching.”
All 11 S&P 500 sectors closed in negative territory, with Energy stocks leading laggards despite WTI crude rising for a fourth consecutive week. Financials also underperformed, as banks came under pressure amid a flatter yield curve. The KBW Bank Index capped a 7.8% weekly decline. In earnings, Adobe (ADBE +2.58%) rose after issuing upbeat forward guidance following a top and bottom line beat.

Financial, Tech, and Commodity-Linked Groups Led Decliners
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Financials had a negative influence on the major averages as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -2.73%) and Bank Index ($BKX -2.58%) both lost ground. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX -2.44%) and Networking Index ($NWX -2.50%) both suffered large losses while the Biotech Index ($BTK -0.08%) finished flat. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.31%) also edged lower. Commodity-linked groups had a negative bias as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -2.35%), Oil Services Index ($OSX -2.24%), and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -2.83%) ended unanimously lower.
PICTURED: The Semiconductor Index ($SOX -2.44%) pulled back near its 50-day moving average line.

Abrupt Slump Back Into Latest Base With 2 Volume-Driven Losses
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Oppenheimer Holdings Inc (OPY -$4.11 or -7.73% to $49.03) pulled back abruptly with above average volume behind 2 consecutive losses, slumping below prior highs and back into the prior base raising concerns. A new base had formed after it was last shown in the FSU section on 5/17/21 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Extended From Any Sound Base After Decent Rally". Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($48.48) defines important near term support. Fundamentals remain strong.
Bullish action came after it reported Mar '21 quarterly earnings +402% on +59% sales revenues versus the year ago period. It showed strong earnings increases over the year ago period in the past 4 quarterly comparisons. Annual earnings (A criteria) growth has been strong after a downturn and losses in FY '15 & '16." It has the highest possible Earnings Per Share Rating of 99.
OPY traded up as much as +43.13% since first highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 2/05/21 high plus 10 cents in the 2/25/21 mid-day report (read here). The company hails from the FINANCIAL SERVICES - Investment Brokerage - Regional industry group which is now ranked 44th on the 197 Industry Groups list (L criteria). There is a small supply of only 9.2 million shares in the publicly traded float (S criteria) which can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares reportedly fell from 212 in Jun '20 to 215 in Mar '21, however, its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.8 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under slight accumulation over the past 50 days (I criteria).

Confirming gains above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume are still needed to help clinch a convincing technical buy signal. Slumped well below its 50 DMA line ($183), which has acted as resistance, with today's big loss on heavier volume. Its current Relative Strength Rating is 63, below the 80+ minimum for buy candidates. It will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight. A rebound above the 50 DMA line is needed for its outlook to improve.

Y - Challenging its all-time high with today's 7th consecutive gain marked by ever-increasing volume. Color code was changed to yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 2/10/21 high plus 10 cents. Subsequent gains above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume are needed to trigger a technical buy signal. Found support after dipping below its 200 DMA line during the choppy consolidation since dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 3/04/21. Rebound above the 50 DMA line helped its outlook improve. Its Relative Strength Rating improved to 84, above the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates. Reported Mar '21 quarterly earnings +958% on +110% sales revenues versus the year ago period, continuing its strong earnings track record.

G - Violated its 50 DMA line ($87.39) with today's 5th consecutive loss raising concerns and triggering a technical sell signal. Its color code is changed to green. Only a prompt rebound above the 50 DMA line would help its outlook improve. Prior highs in the $80 area define near-term support to watch on pullbacks. Reported Mar 21 quarterly earnings +245% on +42% sales revenues versus the year ago period, continuing its strong earnings track record.
