Leadership Expands Again as Major Averages Rise
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished higher Tuesday. The Dow added 102 points to 25385. The S&P 500 climbed 3 points to 2751 and is off to its best start since 1987. The Nasdaq was up 6 points to 7163. Volume totals reported were mixed, lighter than the prior session total on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by almost a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and by 7-6 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 110 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 101 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals expanded and solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The Featured Stocks Page provides the latest analysis on noteworthy high-ranked leaders. Charts used courtesy of www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit another new record high.
The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend. Investors should only consider stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based investment system as they trigger technical buy signals.
The major averages resumed their record rally after Monday’s brief pause as investors remain optimistic on the strength of the U.S economy. On the data front, a release revealed small business optimism decreased in December more than consensus estimates, however the full year reading for 2017 set an all-time record. An additional report revealed the number of job openings unexpectedly declined in November from the prior month.
The Healthcare sector rebounded from Monday’s decline as shares of Illumina (ILMN +6.93%) and Boston Scientific (BSX +8.33%) rose after both firms posted revenue figures above estimates. Financial shares also paced gains as Lincoln National (LNC +3.47%) rose. In Industrials, Boeing (BA +2.67%) rose,, which helped offset a big drop in Acuity Brands (AYI -14.96%) as the electrical equipment designer missed sales quarterly sales projections. Under Armour (UA -4.60%) was another notable decliner as shares of the athletic apparel maker dropped.
Treasury prices were lower across the curve. The yield on the 10-year note climbed six basis points to 2.54%, its highest level in nearly nine months. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude gained 1.9% to $62.93/barrel. COMEX gold fell 0.4% to $1314.60/ounce.

Perched Near High After Brief Consolidation Below 50 DMA Line
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Essent Group Ltd (ESNT +$0.17 or +0.37% to $45.69) is consolidating above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($44.34), and it ended the session perched only -3.4% off its all-time high. Its Relative Strength rating is 83, having improved after a recent slump below the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates. Recent lows in the $43.00 area define important support where more damaging losses would raise greater concerns. It was last shown in this FSU section on 12/14/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Pulling Back After Recently Wedging Higher".
Fundamentals remain strong. It currently has a Timeliness rating of A and a Sponsorship rating of C. The high-ranked Finance-Mrtg and Rel Svc firm's quarterly earnings have been above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) and sales revenues increases in comparisons through Sep '17 have been strong. Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been good since its $17 IPO on 10/31/13.
Essent has traded up as much as +38.7% since first highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 12/12/16 high plus 10 cents in the 1/25/17 mid-day report (read here). The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 317 in Mar '16 to 536 in Sep '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume ratio of 1.5 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. |

Y - Posted a gain with below average volume for a best-ever close. Color code was changed to yellow after an advanced "3-weeks tight" base was noted. New pivot point was cited based on its 12/18/17 high plus 10 cents. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Its 50 DMA line ($43.93) defines near-term support to watch. Made gradual progress since 10/26/17 when it priced a Secondary Offering. Fundamentals remain strong.
