The Nasdaq Composite climbed 52 points to 7460. Volume totals reported were mixed, lighter than the prior session total on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index posted a small gain for another new record high close.  The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend.  Investors should only consider stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based investment system as they trigger technical buy signals.

U.S. equities finished broadly in positive territory following a flurry of strong corporate earnings releases. Focus was also directed towards several key economic updates scheduled for later this week. The start of the World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland, which includes a speech from President Trump, also garnered attention in the session.

Six of 11 S&P 500 sectors were up on the session. Consumer Discretionary paced gains as Netflix (NFLX +9.98%) rose after the video streaming service revealed new subscriber figures well above consensus estimates. Johnson & Johnson (JNJ -4.26%) and Proctor & Gamble (PG -3.09%) fell despite both companies topping earnings forecasts. ResMed (RMD +14.67%) was up the most in the S&P 500 as shares jumped as the medical-device maker’s quarterly figures exceeded projections. In Financials, Travelers (TRV +4.96%) and TD Ameritrade (AMTD +1.29%) following their better-than-anticipated results. United Continental (UAL +1.43%) ahead of its earnings announcement after the close.

Treasury prices climbed higher Tuesday, sending yields lower. The 10-year note yield was down four basis points to 2.62%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude rose 1.9% to $64.75/barrel. COMEX gold added 0.7% to $1340.70/ounce amid a weaker dollar.

Considerable Gains in First 2-3 Weeks After Recent Breakout

Texas Pacific Land Trust (TPL -$18.07 or -3.23% to $541.03) is consolidating after getting very extended from the prior base. Disciplined investors avoid chasing stocks more than +5% above the prior high or pivot point. Prior highs in the $434 area define initial support to watch on pullbacks.

TPL tallied gains of greater than +20% in the first 2-3 weeks after its technical breakout. When such substantial gains are quickly produced, the fact-based investment system's rules suggest holding for a minimum of 8 weeks. It was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 10/13/17 high plus 10 cents in the 12/21/17 mid-day report (read here). Subsequent volume-driven gains above the pivot point triggered a technical buy signal under the fact-based investment system's rules. It was last shown in the FSU on 12/21/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Real Estate Trust Perched Within Striking Distance of Prior High".

The thinly-traded Texas Real Estate Development firm has only 7.9 million shares outstanding (S criteria). It reported earnings +200% on +198% sales revenues for the Sep '17 quarter, marking its 4th very strong quarterly comparison above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 37 in Dec '16 to 57 in Sep '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. The current Up/Down Volume ratio of 1.9 is an unbiased indication that institutional accumulation/distribution action has been neutral over the past 50 days. It has earned a Timeliness rating of A and a Sponsorship Rating of C.

Y - Finished strong today after highlighted in yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 10/20/17 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report. Rebounded above its 50 DMA line on 1/17/18 and little overhead supply remains after additional volume-driven gains. Gains above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume are still needed to trigger a technical buy signal. Found support at its 200 DMA line after it was dropped from the Featured Stocks list on 12/01/17. Fundamentals remain very strong. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and a new annotated graph.
