PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average pulled back from its record high.  The Blue Chip index has rallied +21% from mid-August when it was testing support near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.  The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend.  Investors should only consider stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based investment system as they trigger technical buy signals.

U.S. equities retreated from yesterday’s record highs following updates on the economy and corporate earnings. On the data front, housing starts unexpectedly fell 8.2% while building permits slipped 0.1% in December. In a separate release, initial jobless claims fell to 220,000 in the most recent week - the lowest level since 1973.

Technology outperformed with Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM +3.34%) up after topping profit projections. International Business Machines (IBM +0.28%) edged higher ahead of its earnings announcement scheduled shortly after the close. In Financials, Bank of New York Mellon (BK -4.39%) fell while Morgan Stanley (MS +0.89%) rose after both firms revealed mixed quarterly results. Raw material producers were weak on the session. Alcoa (AA -7.00%) fell after missing earnings estimates. Albemarle (ALB -7.12%) fell on analyst concerns surrounding declining lithium prices. Wyndham Worldwide (WYN +4.78%) rose after announcing the acquisition of La Quinta’s hotel franchises for $1.95 billion in cash.

Treasuries were lower sending yields higher. The 10-year note yield was up four basis points to 2.62%, the highest level since March 2017. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude fell 0.1% to $63.77/barrel. COMEX gold lost 0.9% to $1327.00/ounce.

PICTURED: The Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.82%) is consolidating after an abrupt rally in recent weeks.  Chart readers may note the crossover of the 50-day and 200-day moving averages as a bullish signal. That may be good news fans of the group who might have suffered in recent years.  The fact-based investment system has shown that investors have most favorable odds when buying leading stocks that have shown strong and steady annual earnings (A criteria) in the past 3-5 years. However, very few companies in the energy group have done that due to the dynamism of oil prices and the market volatility, globally.

Bargain Outlet Looked Expensive Before +114% Rally in 18 Months

Ollie's Bargain Outlet (OLLI +$0.45 and +0.82% to $55.05) is perched near its all-time high, extended from any sound base. Its recent low ($50.15 on 1/04/18) and the 50-day moving average  DMA line ($49.51) define important near-term support above prior highs in the $46 area.

Fundamentals remain very strong. Recently it reported earnings +29% on +18% sales revenues for the Oct '17 quarter, continuing its strong earnings track record and meeting the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). It has earned a very strong 97 Earnings Per Share (EPS) rating.

The Retail - Discount & Variety firm traded up as much as +114.42% since highlighted in yellow with a pivot point based on its 4/28/16 high plus 10 cents in 7/19/16 mid-day report (read here). OLLI was last shown in this FSU section on 12/20/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Extended From Latest Base and Perched Near Record High".

OLLI completed its $16 IPO on 7/16/15. It completed a Secondary Offerings on 6/06/16 and 2/18/16. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 98 in Sep '15 to 425 in Dec '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume ratio of 1.8 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. The small supply of only 61.7 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
