Leadership Improved as Major Indices Rose on Lighter Volume

Stocks finished higher Tuesday. The Dow added 112 points to 25299, while the S&P 500 advanced 18 points to 2839. The Nasdaq Composite gained 51 points to 7870. The volume totals reported were lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange versus the prior session's totals. Advancers led decliners by an 11-4 margin on the NYSE and by almost a 2-1 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 43 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 27 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices (M criteria) remain in a confirmed rally with a healthy crop of stocks hitting new highs and providing market leadership. PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index is consolidating -1.14% from its record high.

The Dow and S&P 500 snapped four day losing streaks as strong corporate earnings outweighed lingering geopolitical concerns. As second quarter earnings season is nearing its conclusion, 79 percent of S&P 500 companies reporting results have beaten analysts' estimates, according to Thomson Reuters. On the data front, an update revealed small business optimism unexpectedly increased in July, to the second-highest level on record. An additional update showed, import prices held steady in July, while export prices declined by 0.5% during the same period.

All 11 S&P 500 sectors finished higher on the session. Consumer Discretionary shares were up the most with Advance Auto Parts (AAP +7.79%) rallying as the company easily bested profit projections. Meanwhile, Home Depot (HD -0.54%) edged lower after the home improvement store stated higher transportation costs could impact future profit growth. Financials also outperformed as the group rebounded from Monday’s weakness which was attributed to concerns over Turkey’s ability to repay its debt.

Treasuries were weaker along the curve as the yield on the benchmark 10-year note climbed two basis points to 2.89%. In commodities, WTI crude was up less than 0.1% to $67.22/barrel. COMEX gold advanced 0.1% to $1193.00 despite a stronger dollar.

Retail, Financial, Biotech, Networking, and Energy Indexes Rose

The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.85%), Bank Index ($BKX +1.35%), and the Retail Index ($RLX +0.91%) posted gains that gave the major indices a boost on Tuesday. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.19%) edged lower, meanwhile the Networking Index ($NWX +0.45%) and the Biotech Index ($BTK +0.78%) ended the session higher. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.30%) lost ground while the Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.36%) and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.49%) each posted a modest gain.

Strength Returned After Finding Support Near Prior Lows

Sendgrid Inc (SEND -$0.12 or -0.37% to $32.30) pulled back slightly today with lighter volume. It was highlighted in yellow again in the prior mid-day report (read here) with a new pivot point cited based on its 3/12/18 high plus 10 cents. It hit a new 52-week high with a gain and close above the pivot point backed by +80% above average volume triggering a new technical buy signal. Prior lows in the $24 area define important support. It completed a new Public Offering and Secondary Offering on 4/05/18.

It reported earnings +400% on +32% sales revenues for the quarter ended June 30, 2018 versus the year ago period, continuing its track record of strong sales revenues and earnings increases in quarterly comparisons. It had a profitable FY '17 after years of shrinking losses of 29 cents per share in FY '14, a loss of 11 cents per share in FY '15, and a loss of 3 cents per share in FY '16. Some concerns remain due to its limited annual earnings (A criteria) history since its $16 IPO on 11/15/17.

SEND was last shown in this FSU section on 6/14/18 under the headline, "Volume-Driven Gains Above 50-Day Average Help Outlook Improve", but it subsequently slumped below the 50 DMA line and was dropped from the Featured Stocks list. It found support near the prior lows in the $24 area. It was first highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 2/27/18 high in the 3/06/18 mid-day report (read here).

There are only 44.3 million shares outstanding (S criteria). In Dec '17 102 top-rated funds reportedly own its shares,and that rose to 178 in Jun '18. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.7 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. It has a Timeliness rating of A and a Sponsorship rating of B.
