Indices Mixed While Leadership Remains Healthy
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished mixed on Thursday. The Dow was up 32 points to 20100. The S&P 500 lost 1 point to 2296 and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 1 point to 5655. Volume totals were lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was slightly negative as decliners led advancers by a 3-2 margin on the Nasdaq exchange while the mix was near even on the NYSE. There were 73 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 80 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals contracted yet still solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange.
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index rallied for a new record high with increasing volume behind gains. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and recent lows define near-term support to watch on pullbacks.
A solid expansion in leadership was behind the major averages' (M criteria) latest gains and the market is in a confirmed uptrend. New buying efforts should only be made in candidates with superior fundamental and technical characteristics. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The major averages fluctuated throughout the session Thursday amid a flurry of corporate earnings reports and economic releases. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 20,000 for the second-straight day to a fresh all-time high. On the data front, initial jobless claims came in at 259,000, above the expected 247,000. In a separate release, new home sales fell 10.4% in December, firmly below estimates. Finally, Markit’s preliminary survey of U.S. business activity expanded to 55.1 in January.
Six of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. Health Care shares finished lower with McKesson (MCK -8.31%) falling. Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY -5.51%) fell as quarterly sales slowed for its antiviral drugs. Technology stocks underperformed with F5 Networks (FFIV -8.25%) falling. Shares of Qualcomm (QCOM -5.01%) fell after the chipmaker’s quarterly revenue fell below Street forecasts. In the consumer space, Charter (CHTR +7.30%) rose amid takeover speculation. United Rentals Industrials (URI +11.20%) rallied as the company’s forward guidance beat expectations.
Treasuries edged higher on the session with the benchmark 10-year note up 2/32 to yield 2.50%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 2.1% to $53.83/barrel. COMEX gold lost 0.7% to $1189.20/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index gained 0.5%.
