Major Indices Rally Further Into Record High Territory
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
For the week the Dow was up 2.1%, the S&P 500 added 2.2% and the Nasdaq climbed 2.3%. Stocks were firmly higher Friday. The Dow climbed 224 points to 26616 and the S&P 500 added 34 points to 2872. The Nasdaq Composite gained 95 points to 7505. Volume totals reported were mixed, lower than the prior session total on the NYSE and higher on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by a narrow margin on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs totals expanded and solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows totals on the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. There were 96 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 74 on the prior session. The Featured Stocks Page provides the latest analysis on noteworthy high-ranked leaders. Charts used courtesy of www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index hit another new record high, making steady progress in January. The major averages (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend. Investors should only consider stocks meeting all key criteria of the fact-based investment system as they trigger technical buy signals.
The major averages finished at all-time record levels and notched their fourth consecutive weekly gain following generally positive corporate earnings releases. On the data front, the preliminary fourth-quarter GDP figure revealed the U.S. economy expanded at a 2.6% annualized rate. While below a projected 3.0% increase, imports rose at the fastest pace in over seven years. In a separate release, durable goods orders were up 2.9% in December, surpassing 0.8% consensus estimates.
Health Care shares were outperformers as AbbVie Inc. (ABBV +13.77%) rose after exceeding analyst expectations. Technology also paced gains as Intel (INTC +10.55%) rallied after the chipmaker topped earnings projections. VMware (VMW +8.99%) surged on reports Dell Technologies Inc (DVMT -6.45%) may purchase the remainder of the company it doesn’t already own. In other earnings news, Colgate-Palmolive (CL -4.85%) fell despite posting profits that matched forecasts. E-Trade (ETFC -1.33%) fell on higher expenses and disappointing guidance. Shares of Wynn Resorts (WYNN -10.12%) were a notable decliner amid allegations of workplace misconduct by CEO Steve Wynn.
Treasuries were weaker along the curve sending yields higher. The 10-year note yield climbed three basis points to 2.65%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude gained 1.1% to $66.21/barrel. COMEX gold fell 1.0% to $1349.60/ounce.

Damaging Losses Hurt Companies That Make Recreational Vehicles
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Thor Industries Inc (THO -$11.10 or -7.33% to $140.33) gapped down today violating its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($149.48) with a 2nd consecutive big loss on even heavier volume. There were big losses from most other companies in the same industry group. The weak action was indicative of distributional pressure and triggered a technical sell signal. Its color code was changed to green. Only a prompt rebound above the 50 DMA line would help its outlook improve.
Fundamentals remain strong. Recently it reported earnings +63% on +31% sales revenues for the Oct '17 quarter, continuing its strong earnings track record. The past 5 quarters were above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria) of the fact-based investment system. Its annual earnings history (A criteria) has been good. Return on Equity is reported at 26%, well above the 17% minimum guideline.
The Elkhart, IN based Building - Mobile/Mfg & RV firm failed to produce volume-driven gains and trigger a convincing technical buy signal after last shown in this FSU section on 12/27/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Holding Ground in Tight Range Near High".
THO has earned a current Timeliness rating of A and a Sponsorship rating of C. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 489 in Mar '16 to 643 in Dec '17. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.0 is an unbiased indication its shares have been neutral concerning accumulation/distribution over the past 50 days (I criteria). Its small supply of only 49.5 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. |

Y - Perched within striking distance of its 52-week high. New pivot point cited was based on its 10/20/17 high plus 10 cents in the 1/22/18 mid-day report (read here). Very little overhead supply remains. Subsequent gains above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume are still needed to trigger a technical buy signal.
