Major Indices Pulled Back Yet Posted Weekly Gains
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
For the week, the Dow was up 0.5%, the S&P 500 added 1%, and the Nasdaq climbed 0.8%. Stocks finished lower on Friday. The Dow was down 31 points to 20547 and the S&P 500 lost 7 points to 2348, both remaining below their respective 50-day moving average (DMA) lines. The Nasdaq Composite fell 6 points to 5910. The volume totals reported were mixed, higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and slightly lower on the Nasdaq exchange. Decliners led advancers by a narrow margin on the NYSE and by a 4-3 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 53 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 69 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average churned heavier volume while remaining below its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. Subsequent losses leading to a violation of prior lows would raise greater concerns. The downward trendline and defines the next resistance level.
The major averages' (M criteria) uptrend has recently been under pressure. Focus should also remain on the number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs in the days ahead. For any meaningful market rally there must be healthy crop of leadership (many stocks hitting new highs). The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The major averages fluctuated in choppy trading as investors weighed commentary from President Donald Trump. On Friday, President Trump stated that his administration will unveil a “massive tax cut” in a new reform sometime in the near future. Overseas, European shares finished mixed amid uncertainty ahead of the first round of the French presidential election on Sunday. On the data front, research firm Markit revealed that U.S. manufacturing PMI came in at 52.8 in April, below expectations.
Nine of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in negative territory. Telecom stocks declined with Verizon (VZ -2.40%) down for its second day of losses after releasing its quarterly report. Energy shares underperformed with Schlumberger (SLB -2.18%) down. In Industrials, General Electric (GE -2.38%) fell after reporting a sharp drop in cash flow for the quarter. Honeywell (HON +2.67%) gapped up andn hit a new all-time high with a solid quarterly performance on strong aerospace and energy sales. Utilities advanced on the session with NextEra Energy (NEE +1.64%) rose after reiterating its earnings outlook amid its failed merger with Oncor.
Treasuries finished mostly higher with the benchmark 10-year note up 2/32 to yield 2.23%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude retreated 2.2% to 49.59/barrel. In FOREX, the Dollar Index gained 0.2%.

New Base Formed Above 50-Day Moving Average Line
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Insperity Inc (NSP -$0.95 or -1.06% to $88.65) has been quietly consolidating above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. It is perched within close striking distance of its all-time high. Its color code was changed to yellow with a new pivot point cited based on its 3/15/17 high plus 10 cents. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Old highs the $82 area define the next important support level to watch below its 50 DMA line. Subsequent losses leading to violations would trigger technical sell signals.
Its Timeliness Rating is A and its Sponsorship Rating is B. The high-ranked Commercial Services - Outsourcing firm was highlighted in the 2/14/17 mid-day report (read here) with a pivot point cited based on its 7/26/16 high plus 10 cents. A considerable volume-driven gain on 2/13/17 had triggered a technical buy signal. It was last shown in this FSU section on 3/22/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Ordinary Pullback From Highs With Lighter Volume".
It has tallied 4 consecutive strong earnings increases above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). It reported earnings +76% on +12% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarter. Annual earnings (A criteria) history has improved after a downturn in FY '13.
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 319 in Mar '16 to 408 in Mar '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 15.1 million shares in the public float (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

Recent low ($57.89 on 4/11/17) defines near-term support to watch on pullbacks. Repeatedly noted with caution - "The 2 latest quarterly comparisons (Sep and Dec '16) were below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), and its waning sales revenues growth rate was also noted recently as a fundamental concern.
