Leadership Improved But Major Indices Showed Little Change
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished little changed on Thursday. The Dow was down 6 points to 20951. The S&P 500 added a point to 2389 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 2 points to 6075. The volume totals reported were near the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and by an 8-7 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 52 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 33 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals expanded and solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. PICTURED: The benchmark S&P 500 Index perched within close striking distance of its record high.
The major averages' (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend, and there has remains a healthy level of market leadership (number of high-ranked stocks hitting new highs). New buying efforts should be made only in stocks matching all of the fundamental and technical criteria of the fact-based investment system. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The major averages fluctuated on the session Thursday after the House of Representatives successfully passed a bill aimed at repealing and replacing Obamacare. Energy shares also pressured the broader market as oil prices hit a five-month low. On the data front, initial jobless claims came in at 238,000, below the expected 248,000. In separate releases, durable goods orders increased 0.9% in March while factory orders rose 0.2%. Investors will now look ahead to tomorrow’s non-farm labor report.
Eight of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 ended in positive territory. In the consumer space, Church & Dwight (CHD +4.31%) rose as quarterly revenue exceeded Wall Street expectations. AmerisourceBergen (ABC +4.67%) rose after raising its full-year EPS guidance due to lower expense outlook. Shares of Tesla (TSLA -5.00%) fell as the automaker reported a wider-than-expected quarterly loss. In Technology, Facebook (FB -0.63%) fell after the social media giant warned of slowing ad growth. Energy shares retreated as oil prices plunged below $46 a barrel.
Treasuries finished lower with the benchmark 10-year note down 8/32 to yield 2.35%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude retreated 4.8% to $45.52/barrel. COMEX gold lost 1.6% to $1228.70/ounce. In FOREX, the Dollar Index fell 0.5%.

Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Bank Index ($BKX +0.24%) edged higher and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.13) ended slightly in the red on Thursday. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.05%) finished flat. The tech sector was led by the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.97%) while the Networking Index ($NWX -0.57%) and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.12%) both posted small losses. Commodity-linked groups were laggards as the Gold & Silver index ($XAU -2.87%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX -2.46%) outpaced the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -1.67%) to the downside. Due to Report Earnings Prior to Friday's Open
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Installed Building Products' (IBP +$1.15 or +2.22% to $53.00) is consolidating near its all-time high, very extended from its prior base. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($50.97) defines important near-term support to watch on pullbacks. It is due to report earnings before the open on Friday, May 5th. Volume and volatility often increase near earnings news.
IBP was last shown in this FSU section on 4/04/17 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Hovering Near All-Time High Following Volume-Driven Gains". It was highlighted in the 2/27/17 mid-day report in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 12/08/16 high plus 10 cents (read here). Disciplined investors avoid chasing stocks extended more than 5% above prior highs.
The high-ranked Building - Maintenance & Service firm reported earnings +29% on +22% sales revenues for the Dec '16 quarter, and 3 of the 4 prior quarterly comparisons had earnings increases well above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong since its $11 IPO on 2/13/14.
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 226 in Mar '16 to 275 in Mar '17, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 31.8 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling. It currently has a Timeliness Rating of A and a Sponsorship Rating of B.

Y - Pulled back today with light volume, closing just above its 50 DMA line. Recent gains above the pivot point lacked the above average volume needed to trigger a proper new (or add-on) technical buy signal. The 50 DMA line ($23.80) and recent low ($21.89 on 3/22/17) define support where violations would raise more serious concerns and trigger worrisome technical sell signals.
