Nasdaq Composite Index Rebounded Above 50-Day Average
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
For the week, the Dow was up 0.1%, the S&P added 0.4%, and the Nasdaq gained 0.8%. Stocks finished little changed on Friday. The Dow was down 16 points to 18145. The S&P 500 slipped less than a point to 2141 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 15 points to 5257. The reported volume totals were mixed, higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and lighter on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers narrowly outnumbered decliners on the NYSE while decliners led advancers by 5-3 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 14 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus 12 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index rose to close the week above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
Recent deterioration in the charts of the major averages (M criteria) and evaporating leadership (fewer stocks hitting new highs) are signs that the uptrend is under pressure. The S&P 500 Index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average met resistance near their respective 50 DMA lines and abruptly retreated near prior lows. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The major averages fluctuated in choppy trading as a stronger U.S. dollar weighed against corporate earnings reports. In FOREX, the Dollar Index gained 0.4%, with particular strength against the euro. On the M&A front, Reynolds American (RAI +14.01%) rose after British American Tobacco submitted a $47 billion offer for the remaining stake in the company. Shares of Time Warner (TWC +7.82%) rose amid reports the company is in advanced talks to be acquired by AT&T (T -3.00%).
Seven of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 finished in negative territory. In earnings, Schlumberger (SLB -3.04%) fell after reporting an 82% drop in profit from a year earlier. Industrials declined with General Electric (GE -0.31%) edging lower as the company cut its forecast for organic sales growth. In Tech, Microsoft (MSFT +4.21%) gapped up for a new all-time high after revenue for its cloud business rose 8.3% this quarter. In the consumer space, McDonald’s (MCD +3.04%) was higher as global comparable-store sales increased 3.5%. Shares of PayPal (PYPL +10.13%) after being the subject of positive analyst commentary.
Treasuries advanced with the benchmark 10-year note up 6/32 to yield 1.73%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 0.5% to $50.88/barrel. COMEX gold was little changed at $1265.90/ounce.

Very Extended From Base Following Additional Gains
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Netease Inc (NTES -0.97% or -0.37% to $263.53) is still holding its ground stubbornly near its all-time high with recent volume totals cooling. It rallied higher since last shown in this FSU section on 9/21/16 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Extended From Prior Base". It has not formed a sound base of sufficient length since and it has been repeatedly noted - "Very extended from any sound base. Its 50 DMA line defines near-term support to watch".
Keep in mind it is due to report earnings on 11/09/16, and volume and volatility often increase near earnings news. NTES reported earnings +89% on +83% sales revenues for the Jun '16 quarter, continuing its strong earnings track record and marking its 4th consecutive quarter with earnings above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Annual earnings (A criteria) growth also has been strong.
Since shown in this FSU section on 6/29/16 the Computer Software - gaming group has seen its Group Relative Strength Rating of rise to 98 from 37, a reassuring improvement regarding the L criteria. NTES has traded up as much as +49.4% since highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 12/29/15 high plus 10 cents in the 6/29/16 mid-day report (read here).
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 467 in Jun '15 to 846 in Sep '16, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.7 is also an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. |
