Nasdaq Rallies to New Record Highs With Volume Increase
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished higher on Thursday. The Dow climbed 180 points to 18115. The S&P 500 advanced 20 points to 2121. Volume totals were higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, an encouraging indication that institutional buying demand was on the rise. Breadth was solidly positive as advancers led decliners by a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and by a 5-2 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership expanded as there were 86 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 66 stocks. The number of new 52-week highs expanded and solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 14 of the 15 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page, an encouragingly better positive bias than the broader market.
Healthy leadership (many stocks hitting new 52-week highs) remains a reassuring sign that investors have a favorable market environment (M criteria). The fact-based investment system encourages only buying stocks meeting all of the key fundamental and technical criteria.
PICTURED: Strength in the tech sector pushed the Nasdaq Composite index up 68 points to 5132, an all-time high.
The major averages gained as investors focused on Fed speak and shrugged off Greek debt concerns. After the Fed’s two-day meeting, Janet Yellen stated plans for a rate increase in 2015, but reiterated a gradual and data dependent path. Overseas, Greek and EU officials continued bantering over a potential Greek default and Grexit.
All 10 sectors of the S&P 500 advanced with health care and consumer stocks outperforming. In health stocks, Amgen (AMGN +2.87%) rose while positive drug trial results spurred a jump in BioMarin (BMRN +12.18%) Positive analyst commentary lifted consumer discretionary stocks as Harley Davidson (HOG +4.15%) and Ralph Lauren (RL +3.56%) posted gains. In staples, a weaker dollar helped Colgate (CL +1.14%) while Altria (MO +1.85%) climbed. In earnings, disappointing quarterly results sent Oracle (ORCL -4.83%) lower. On its first day of trading, Fitbit (FIT +48.4%) posted a huge gain.
Treasuries slid lower. The benchmark 10-year note fell 4/32 to yield 2.33%. Commodities were mostly higher. WTI crude advanced 0.8% to $60.39/barrel. COMEX gold climbed 2.1% to $1201.50/ounce. In FOREX, the dollar finished lower as the euro gained 0.3% to $1.1372/EUR and the yen strengthened by 0.4% to ¥122.92/USD.

Volume Totals Cooling During Consolidation After Breakout
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Avago Technologies Ltd (AVGO +$2.32 or +1.65% to $143.00) has held its ground and volume totals have been cooling while consolidating above support at prior highs in the $136 area, a reassuring sign that few investors have been headed for the exit. It was last shown in this FSU section on 5/28/15 under the headline, "Strong Sales and Earnings Acceleration For Tech Leader", after highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 3/23/15 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). This Singapore-based Electronics - Semiconductor firm was featured after technically breaking out of a riskier "late stage" base with a considerable volume-driven gain. It announced plans to acquire Broadcom (BRCM) as mentioned in the 5/27/15 commentary (read here).
Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.4 is an unbiaaed indicatin its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. The number of top-rated funds owning its share rose from 1137 in Jun '14 to 1466 in Mar '15, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Leadership in the Semiconductor group is a reassuring sign concerning the L criteria.
The Apr '15 quarter marked its 6th consecutive quarterly earnings increase above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Earnings rose by +29%, +39%, +70%, +124%, +149%, and +151% in the Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct '14, Jan '15, and Apr '15 quarterly comparisons versus the year ago periods, respectively, showing impressive acceleration. Sales revenues rose +23%, 25%, +97%, +115%, +131%, and +130% during that time span. Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong.
Disciplined investors avoid chasing stocks more than +5% above prior highs, and they always limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price. The graph below shows the volume totals cooling after its technical breakout gain.

Y - Volume totals still have been cooling while consolidating above prior highs in the $97 area. No resistance remains due to overhead supply, however, it stalled after highlighted in yellow in the 6/10/15 mid-day report. Subsequent losses leading to a close below its old high close ($97.27 on 3/20/15) would raise concerns by completely negating the recent breakout.
