Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished higher on Thursday. The S&P 500 added 3 points to 2108. The NASDAQ advanced 5 points to 5082. Volume totals were mixed, higher than the prior session total on the NYSE and lower on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by a 3-2 margin on the NYSE, meanwhile the mix was close to even on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 65 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 87 stocks. New 52-week highs still outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 6 of the 16 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
The increase in healthy leadership (more stocks hitting new 52-week highs) with higher volume totals on Wednesday provided fresh and reassuring proof that investors have a favorable market environment (M criteria). The fact-based investment system encourages only buying stocks meeting all of the key fundamental and technical criteria.
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 38 points to 18039, rebounding to its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.
The major averages gained as investors focused on positive economic data. While May’s retail sales showed good improvement over the prior month’s reading, jobless claims also managed to remain at a multi-year low. Overseas, Greece and its creditors came closer to a resolution, but still have yet to find common ground.
Seven of 10 S&P 500 sectors advanced. Health care and utilities were notable outperformers as Biogen (BIIB +1.30%) and Duke Energy (DUK +1.12%) posted gains. Merger speculation pushed CSX (CSX +2.94%) up for a second day. In tech companies, Citrix (CTXS +6.70%) rose on announcements that Elliott Management owned 7.1% of the company. Energy was a relative weak spot on OPEC over-production concerns. Negative analyst commentary compounded the fears, hurting Transocean (RIG -4.98%) and sending Chesapeake Energy (CHK -4.29%) to a six-year low.
Treasuries climbed after a multi-day rout in debt markets. The benchmark 10-year note rose 29/32 to yield 2.38%. Amid a well-received $13 billion auction of 30-year bonds, the security climbed over two full points to yield 3.10%.
Commodities were mostly lower amid dollar strength. WTI crude fell 1.2% to $60.69/barrel. COMEX gold declined 0.5% to $1179.90/ounce. The euro fell 0.5% to $1.1270/EUR and the yen weakened 0.6% to ¥123.35/USD.

PICTURED: The Bank Index ($BKX +1.71%) has made a sharp rally into new high territory in recent weeks. Financials are reliable leading indicators, so the strength bodes well for the broader market outlook. Historically, the major averages have been most prone to severe downdrafts when financial shares were struggling.

Found Support After Wedging From Late Stage Base
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Skyworks Solutions Inc (SWKS +$0.09 or +0.09% to $105.63) found prompt support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($99.62) after briefly undercutting prior highs in the $102 area. The recent low ($98.07 on 6/09/15) and its 50 DMA line define important near-term support where damaging violations may trigger technical sell signals. The weekly chart below shows its considerable rally over the past 2 years. After building a riskier "late-stage" base pattern, it wedged higher. SWKS was last shown in this FSU section on 5/19/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Gains for New Highs Lacked Substantial Volume Conviction". Without heavy volume behind a breakout, investors are missing the necessary proof of serious institutional buying demand capable of contributing to a considerable and sustained advance in price. Members were previously reminded - "Gains backed by at least +40% above average volume while rallying above the pivot point may trigger a technical buy signal." SWKS failed to trigger a proper technical buy signal since highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 3/23/15 high plus 10 cents in the 5/01/15 mid-day report (read here). It showed sales revenues increases of +35%, 51%, +59%, and +58% during the Jun, Sep, Dec '14, and Mar '15 quarterly comparisons, respectively. That is a reassuring sign of great demand for new products or services (N criteria). Meanwhile, earnings increases were +54%, +75%, +88%, and +85% during that same period. Quarterly comparisons have shown earnings well above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong. It has earned a Timeliness rating of A, and a Sponsorship rating of B. There are 187.3 million shares (S criteria) in the public float. The number of top-rated funds rose from 714 in Jun '14 to1095 in Mar '15, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. The Electronics - Semiconductor Manufacturing group has a Group Relative Strength Rating of 83, a reassuring sign concerning the L criteria.

Triggered a technical buy signal with a gain backed by +55% above average volume on the prior session. Rallying with no resistance remaining due to overhead supply. Reported earnings +35% on +41% sales revenues for the quarter ended March 31, 2015, and prior quarterly comparisons were above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Following a downturn in its FY '11 earnings its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and annotated graphs.

Gains above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume may trigger a technical buy signal. Disciplined investors use a tactic called pyramiding which the fact-based system suggests to help investors to allow the market action to dictate their purchase decisions. G - Managed a best-ever close today with a gain on near average volume. It is very extended from any sound base. Prior highs in the $158 area define initial support above its 50 DMA line where subsequent violations would raise concerns and trigger technical sell signals.
