Breadth Positive and Volume Higher as Indices Rallied

Stocks closed sharply higher on Wednesday. The Dow jumped 236 points to close at 18000. The S&P 500 advanced 25 points to finish at 2105. The NASDAQ ended up 62 points to 5076. Volume totals were higher than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, a reassuring sign of increasing institutional buying demand. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by an 11-4 margin on the NYSE and by a 3-1 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership expanded as there were 87 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the BreakOuts Page, up from the prior session total of 36 stocks. New 52-week highs easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 13 of the 16 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.

The session's increase in healthy leadership (more stocks hitting new 52-week highs) with higher volume totals provided fresh and reassuring proof that investors have a favorable market environment (M criteria). The fact-based investment system encourages only buying stocks meeting all of the key fundamental and technical criteria.

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index found support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line.

The major averages rebounded after a report suggested Germany was willing to make concessions in bailout talks with Greece. Optimism from the news sent the Euro Stoxx 600 +2% higher after six straight losing sessions.

All ten S&P 500 Sectors moved higher with seven gaining over +1%. Tech and financials were the best performers on the day. Microsoft (MSFT +2.10%) helped to lead the way in tech. Insurers bolstered the financial sector with MetLife (MET +2.87%) and AIG (AIG +2.82%) both posting gains.

In corporate news, Johnson Controls (JCI +3.94%) rose after announcing a possible spin-off of its automotive division. Netflix (NFLX +3.70%) rose after shareholders voted on an increase in allowable shares, paving the way for a stock split.

Yields continued to push higher as the bond markets did not share in the global rally. The U.S. benchmark 10-year note lost 12/32 to yield 2.48%.

Commodities moved higher on Wednesday. WTI crude prices jumped 1.8% to $61.21/barrel after a report showed that crude inventories decreased for a sixth-straight week. COMEX gold advanced 0.7% to $1185.60/ounce while the dollar index fell 0.6%.

Small Saving & Loan Shows More Signs of Accumulation

B O F I Holding Inc (BOFI  +$1.33 or + 1.34% to $100.39)  hit new 52-week and all-time highs (N criteria) with today's 7th consecutive gain, rallying with no resistance remaining due to overhead supply. It was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 3/23/15 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here) while noted - "It clinched a technical buy signal with a gain backed by +55% above average volume on the prior session."  The weekly graph below shows that some overhead supply remains up through the $106 level. Subsequent gains into new all-time high territory could signal the beginning of another substantial leg up.

Quarterly comparisons have been above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Earnings rose by +35%, +40%, +41%, +38%, and +35% in the Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec '14, and Mar '15 quarters, respectively, versus the year ago periods. Sales revenues were up +21%, +24%, +39%, +41%, and +41% during that span. Following a downturn in its FY '11 earnings its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong.

Leadership from other Finance - Savings & Loan issues is reassuring concerning the L criteria. It has earned a Timeliness rating of A, and a Sponsorship rating of B. Keep in mind that its small supply of only 13.4 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to greater price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

The current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.4 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation (I criteria) over the past 50 days.  The number of top-rated funds owning share rose from 264 in Jun '14 to 269 in Mar '15.

Gains above the pivot point backed by at least +40% above average volume may trigger a technical buy signal. Disciplined investors use a tactic called pyramiding which the fact-based system suggests to help investors to allow the market action to dictate their purchase decisions.
