Major Indices Rally and End First Quarter Strong

Stocks finished higher Friday. The Dow was up 211 points to 25,928, while the S&P 500 added 18 points to 2,834. The Nasdaq gained 60 points to 7,729. The volume totals reported were higher on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by more than a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and nearly 3-2 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as total of 56 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus 34 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices (M criteria) saw their uptrend come under pressure recently, however, healthy market leadership (stocks hitting new highs) remains a reassuring signThFeatured Stocks Page provides the most timely analysis on high-ranked leaders.

PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average is consolidating above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and -3.8% off its record high hit on 10/03/18.

For the week, the S&P 500 added 1.2%, finishing 1.8% higher for March and up 13.1% in the first quarter, which represented the best three-month start to a year since 1998. The Dow rallied 1.7% this week, though the blue-chip index gained less than 0.1% in March to leave it 11.2% higher for the quarter. The Nasdaq climbed 1.1% this week to round out a 2.6% monthly advance and a 16.5% first quarter gain.

The major averages finished the week on a positive note, capping the best quarterly performance for the S&P 500 since 2009. Trade news boosted sentiment, with Steve Mnuchin calling this week’s talks between China and the United States “productive.” On the data front, a report showed new home sales jumped to the highest level in a year in February, while the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment reading for March topped expectations. Separately, an update from the Commerce Department showed core inflation rose 1.8% year-over-year in January, the slowest pace in 11 months.

Nine of 11 S&P 500 sectors ended in positive territory, with Industrials and Health Care shares pacing the gains. CarMax (KMX +9.61%) was the best performing stock in the index, climbing after the auto retailer topped Wall Street earnings projections. Ride-sharing company Lyft (LYFT +8.0%) rose in its first day of public trading.

Treasuries were weaker, with the yield on the 10-year note rising two basis points to 2.40%. The yield on the three-month T-Bill fell to 2.38%, snapping a five-session streak of an inversion between the two maturities. In commodities, WTI crude finished 1.5% higher at $60.18/barrel, capping its best quarterly performance since 2009.

Tech and Retail Indexes Led Group Gainers

ThRetail Index ($RLX +0.66%) posted a modest gain and the financial groups edged higher as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.25%) outpaced the Bank Index ($BKX +0.03%)The tech sector clearly had a positive bias as the Biotech Index ($BTK +2.03%) outpaced the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +1.58%) and the Networking Index ($NWX +0.94%). Commodity-linked groups had a slightly negative tilt as the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.22%), Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.24%), and the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.18%) each sputtered to a small loss.

Consolidating Near 50-Day Average Following Sub Par Report

Alarm.com Holdings Inc (ALRM +$1.39 or +2.19% to $64.90) has found support near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($62.18). However, weak action came after it recently reported earnings +12% on +25% sales revenues for the Dec '18 quarter, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns. That broke a streak of 11 consecutive comparisons above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Disciplined investors always avoid chasing stocks more than +5% above the prior high and always limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price.

ALRM was first highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 10/01/18 high plus 10 cents in the 1/22/19 mid-day report (read here). During a choppy 16-week consolidation its 200 DMA line acted as support. Annual earnings (A criteria) growth has been strong after a downturn in FY '15. It is up considerably from its $14 IPO on 6/26/15.

The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 262 in Mar '18 to 344 in Dec '18, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.4 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. It has earned a Timeliness Rating of A and a Sponsorship Rating of B.
