Leadership Improved While Major Indices Ended Session Mixed

Stocks finished mixed Tuesday. The Dow fell 96 points to 25,554. The S&P 500 gained 8 points to 2,791 and the Nasdaq Composite added 32 points to 7,591. The volume totals reported were lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by almost a 3-2 margin on the NYSE but by a narrower 8-7 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 33 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made a new 52-week high and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus 22 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals again expanded and outnumbered shrinking new 52-week lows totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices (M criteria) are in a confirmed uptrend while the amount of market leadership (stocks hitting new highs) remains healthy. ThFeatured Stocks Page provides the most timely analysis on high-ranked leaders.

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index is -6.7% off its record high after two consecutive gains helped it rebound above its 200-day moving average (DMA) line.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq extended gains, while the Dow declined amid continued weakness in shares of Boeing. Geopolitics garnered outsized attention as investors assessed the defeat of U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May’s revised Brexit plan. On the data front, a release showed the Consumer Price Index ticked up 0.2% in February, its first advance in four months. Core CPI (ex-food and energy) increased 2.1% year-over-year, below projections of 2.2% but above the Fed’s 2% inflation target. Another report revealed small business optimism increased modestly in February, snapping the longest losing streak since 1998.

Nine of 11 S&P 500 sectors finished in positive territory. The Industrials sector lagged as Boeing (BA -6.15%) slumped amid news that the U.K. and Germany were the latest countries to ground the company’s 737 Max jets. In earnings, Stitch Fix (SFIX +25.20%) rose after beating analyst earnings expectations and providing strong forward guidance. Dick’s Sporting Goods (DKS -11.01%) fell after giving a weaker-than-expected earnings outlook.

Treasuries strengthened with the yield on the 10-year note down four basis points to 2.60%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude added 0.2% to $56.91/barrel. COMEX gold gained 0.8% to $1,301.40/ounce amid a weaker dollar.

Consolidating After Getting Extended from Double Bottom Base

Irobot Corp (IRBT +$1.01 or +0.82% to $123.98) posted a 3rd consecutive gain with below average volume. There was a "negative reversal" on 3/05/19 after quietly touching another new all-time high. Recent gains have lacked great volume conviction. It is extended from the previously noted "double bottom" base. Prior high ($103) defines initial support to watch on pullbacks.

It was last shown in this FSU section on 2/08/19 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Volume-Driven Gains Cleared Prior High After Double Bottom". Old highs near the $118 level seem to have acted as support lately, but it has not formed a new base of sufficient length. It found support near its 200-day moving average (DMA) line during a choppy consolidation in recent months.

Fundamentals have remained strong as the Consumer Durables - Electronic Equipment firm showed earnings increases above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) in the past 4 quarterly comparisons through Dec '18. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 347 in Mar '18 to 391 in Dec '18, and its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 2.9 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. It has a B+ Accumulation/Distribution Rating, a Timeliness Rating of A, and Sponsorship rating of B. Its small supply of only 27.7 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
