Major Averages Rose With Better Leadership
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished higher on Tuesday. The Dow was up 17 points to 18547. The S&P 500 added 4 points to 2186 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 15 points to 5260. The volume totals were mixed, higher than the prior session on the NYSE and lighter on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers outnumbered decliners by more than 2-1 on the NYSE and nearly 2-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership improved as there were 61 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 29 on the prior session. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index is consolidating near its record high after rallying above its 2015 peak.
Big gains for the major indices were noted in prior commentaries and that bullish action signaled a new "confirmed uptrend" for the market (M criteria). See the Featured Stocks Pagewhich now lists a few noteworthy candidates that have made headway. The major averages advanced on the session following a better-than-expected update on the housing market. New home sales unexpectedly surged 12.4% in July, to its highest level since October 2007, led by soaring demand in the nation’s south. In a separate release, Markit’s survey of U.S. manufacturing activity fell to 52.1 in August, below expectations of a 52.6 reading. Eight of 10 sectors in the S&P 500 finished in positive territory. Materials paced the gains with Monsanto (MON +2.49%) rose with news the company may be closer to a merger with Bayer AG (BAYRY +0.35%). In earnings, Best Buy (BBY +19.60%) surged as the electronics retailer’s U.S. comparable-store sales rose 0.8% in the quarter. Shares of Toll Brothers (TOL +8.80%) after the luxury home builder reported home sales and home prices increased year-over-year. Consumer Staples shares declined on the session with JM Smucker (SJM -8.07%) fell as quarterly revenue missed estimates amid weaker demand for its pet food products. Treasuries fluctuated along the curve with the benchmark 10-year note down 1/32 to yield 1.54%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude rebounded 1.4% to $48.05/barrel. In FOREX, the dollar weakened against the British pound.
