Major Indices Erased Session's Early Gains
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished lower Tuesday. The major averages fluctuated as investors continue to monitor ongoing trade tensions. The Dow dipped 14 points, snapping a six-session winning streak. The S&P 500 erased its early advance to close less than 0.1% lower, ending its best stretch of gains since April. The Nasdaq Composite closed slightly below unchanged. The volume totals reported were higher on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers narrowly led decliners on the NYSE, but decliners outnumbered advancers by an 8-7 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 59 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 99 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE, but new lows outnumbered new highs on the Nasdaq exchange. Big gains on Friday marked Day 4 of the new rally attempt, and the major indices (M criteria) established a new "confirmed uptrend" under the fact-based system as the bullish session met the requirements to be a proper follow-through day. The Featured Stocks Page provides the most timely analysis on high-ranked leaders. Charts used courtesy of www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index is above its 50-day moving average (DMA) lines and only -2.3% off its record high.
President Trump’s announcement that proposed duties on Mexican imports would be suspended helped lift investor sentiment Monday. However, President Trump also warned that new tariffs would be implemented on Chinese goods if no progress follows the G-20 summit later this month.
Seven of 11 S&P 500 sectors edged higher, with the more defensive Consumer Staples sector leading advancers. Industrials weighed on the major averages, losing 0.9% on pressure from trade uncertainty. Facebook (FB +1.88%) rose on the heels of an analyst upgrade, boosting the FAANG group 0.6% on the day. Meanwhile, Beyond Meat (BYND -25.02%) fell following an analyst downgrade.
The potential for a Federal Reserve interest rate cut also remains in focus ahead of next week’s FOMC meeting. Treasuries were little changed with the yield on the 10-year note flat at 2.14% despite producer price inflation rising for a second consecutive month in May. A separate data release from the NFIB showed small business optimism jumped to the highest level in seven months as companies boosted capital spending plans.

Encountering Distributional Pressure in Recent Weeks
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Qualys Inc (QLYS -$2.60 or -2.93% to $86.13) is sputtering near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($86.12) after today's volume-driven loss. It recently encountered distributional pressure yet found support near its 200 DMA line. Its Relative Strength Rating is 72, below the 80+ minimum guideline for buy candidates. It has met stubborn resistance in the $97-98 area.
QLYS was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited still based on its 7/24/18 high plus 10 cents in the 5/02/19 mid-day report (read here). It was last shown in this FSU section on 5/02/19 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Rallying to Challenge Previously Stubborn Resistance". Subsequent volume-driven gains above the pivot point for a new high (N criteria) may trigger a technical buy signal. Convincing gains into new high territory may be an indication of fresh institutional buying demand that can lead to a meaningful and sustained advance in price.
It reported earnings +36% on +16% sales revenues for the Mar '19 quarter, its 8th consecutive quarter above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Annual earnings history (A criteria) has been strong. The Computer Software - Security group has a 94 Group Relative Strength Rating, and leadership (L criteria) in the industry group is another favorable factor with respect to the fact-based investment system.
Currently it has a Timeliness Rating of A and Sponsorship Rating of C. Its Accumulation/Distribution rating is C+ while its Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.4 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 294 in Jun '17 to 401 in Mar '19, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its small supply of only 32.1 million shares (S criteria) in the public float can contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

Y - Rebounded further above its 50 DMA line ($104) with today's gain on light volume. Color code is changed to yellow with new pivot point cited based on its 4/26/19 high plus 10 cents. Subsequent volume-driven gains above the pivot point are needed to trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Faces some resistance due to overhead supply up to the $115 level. Recent lows in the $98-99 area define important near-term support to watch. Fundamentals remain strong. See the latest FSU analysis for more details and a new annotated graph.
