Weak Nasdaq Composite Lagged Behind Other Major Indices
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished mostly lower Monday, as weakness in internet-based company stocks weighed on investor sentiment. The Dow finished just above the flat line at 24,819, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.3%. The Tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite tumbled 1.6%, with the index closing in correction territory, defined as a more than 10% decline from its recent record high.. The volume totals reported were mixed, lighter on the NYSE and heavier on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by almost a 2-1 margin on the NYSE but by a narrower 8-7 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 22 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 9 on the prior session. New 52-week lows still outnumbered new 52-week highs totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices (M criteria) are showing action indicative of a more worrisome "market correction". The fact-based investment system discourages any new buying efforts and suggests selling stocks on a case-by-case basis, raising cash levels to reduce market exposure. The Featured Stocks Page provides the most timely analysis on high-ranked leaders. Charts used courtesy of www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index slumped further below its 200-day moving average (DMA) line, and losses on higher volume in recent weeks indicate distributional pressure.
The S&P 500 Index, Nasdaq Composite Index, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average are unanimously below their respective long-term 200-day moving average (DMA) lines. Disciplined investors have been watching for a follow-through day of big gains (more than +1%) from at least one of the major indices backed with higher volume and an expansion in stocks reaching new 52-week highs - all of which are critical components for a new confirmed uptrend under the fact-based system.
Concerns of increased regulatory scrutiny on the Google parent Alphabet, Facebook, Apple (AAPL -1.01%), and Amazon (AMZN -4.64%) sent the oft-cited "FAANG" group shedding 4.6% in the session. Alphabet (GOOGL -6.12%) and Facebook (FB -7.51%) paced the declines. The downbeat session follows a tumultuous end to May last week, in which the major averages posted their first monthly decline of the year amid persistent trade tensions.
Investors continued to seek perceived safe-haven assets, pushing Treasury yields lower. The yield on the benchmark 10-year note slid five basis points to 2.08%. Comments from the St. Louis Fed President James Bullard calling for a rate cut “soon” also inspired the yield on the two-year note to extend a five-day slide, the longest retreat since January. On the data front, a gauge of manufacturing activity from ISM came in at 52.1 in May, its lowest reading since October 2016. In commodities, WTI crude fell 1.3%, extending its declines for the fourth consecutive day. COMEX gold jumped 1.6%, hitting a 10-week high, amid a weaker U.S. dollar.

Commodity-Linked Groups, Bank, and Tech Indexes Rose
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Retail Index ($RLX -2.11%) slumped while the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.02%) finished flat and the Bank Index ($BKX +0.83%) rose. The tech sector had a positive bias as the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.33%), Biotech Index ($BTK +0.90%), and the Networking Index ($NWX +0.14%) each ended higher. Commodity-linked groups were standout gainers as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +4.27%) outpaced the Oil Services Index ($OSX +2.06%) and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +1.00%). Charts courtesy of www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The Bank Index ($BKX +0.83%) posted a gain on Monday, but it has been sinking below its 50-day and 200-day moving average (DMA) lines toward prior lows.

Resilient After Latest Quarterly Report Missed Minimum Guideline
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Ensign Group Inc (ENSG -$0.25 or -0.47% to $53.01) showed resilience in recent weeks after it reported earnings +22% on +12% sales revenues for the Mar '19 quarter, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), raising fundamental concerns. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($52.05) defines near-term support to watch.
ENSG found prompt support and rebounded impressively since last shown in this FSU section on 4/17/19 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Two Damaging Losses Hurt Outlook". It was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 12/12/18 high plus 10 cents in the 2/07/19 mid-day report (read here).
Through Dec '18 showed earnings increases were above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) while its sales revenues growth rate was in the 9-11% range. Annual earnings (A criteria) history has improved steadily after downturn in FY '13 and '14. It has an 89 Earnings Per Share Rating.
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 324 in Mar '18 to 474 in Mar '19, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. It has a Timeliness Rating of A and Sponsorship Rating of C. Its small supply of 53 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
