Major Indices Posted Solid Gains While Rebounding
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished firmly higher Tuesday, notching their second best day of 2019. The major averages rebounded amid easing trade tensions and hints of more accommodative Fed policy. The Dow climbed 512 points, while the S&P 500 advanced 2.1%, eclipsing its 200-day moving average. The Nasdaq Composite was up 2.7%, bouncing out of correction territory. The volume totals reported were lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Advancers led decliners by more than a 4-1 margin on the NYSE and by a 3-1 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 31 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List hit new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 22 on the prior session. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE but new 52-week lows still outnumbered new 52-week highs on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices (M criteria) are showing action indicative of a more worrisome "market correction". The fact-based investment system discourages any new buying efforts and suggests selling stocks on a case-by-case basis, raising cash levels to reduce market exposure. The Featured Stocks Page provides the most timely analysis on high-ranked leaders. Charts used courtesy of www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average rebounded toward its 200-day moving average (DMA) line with its 2nd consecutive gain.
The S&P 500 Index and Nasdaq Composite Index both rebounded above their respective long-term 200-day moving average (DMA) lines, however, the solid gains marked only Day 1 of a new rally attempt. Disciplined investors will be watching between Day 4 and Day 7 for a follow-through day of big gains (more than +1%) from at least one of the major indices backed with higher volume and an expansion in stocks reaching new 52-week highs - all of which are critical components for a new confirmed uptrend under the fact-based system.
Federal Reserve comments provided a tailwind to equities, as Fed Chair Jerome Powell signaled an openness to cut interest rates if the economic outlook worsens, noting policymakers will “act as appropriate to sustain the expansion.” In geopolitical news, trade tensions eased following perceived conciliatory remarks from China. Sentiment was further lifted on hopes that President Trump’s plan to implement tariffs on Mexican goods may be prevented by lawmakers. This followed reports that Mexico is exploring retaliatory measures, but would prefer a negotiated solution before next week’s deadline.
Ten of 11 S&P 500 sectors closed in positive territory, with Real Estate the sole decliner. Tech shares rebounded more than 3%, while Materials and Financials also outperformed.
Treasuries declined from multi-year highs following the Fed comments. The yield on the 10-year note jumped five basis points to 2.12%. On the data front, factory orders slipped 0.8% in April, below the prior month’s downwardly revised 1.3% gain. Separately, durable goods orders fell 2.1% in April. In commodities, WTI crude added 0.6%, while COMEX gold edged 0.3% higher amid a weaker dollar.

Rebound Above 50-Day Moving Average Improved Technical Stance
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Envestnet Inc (ENV +$2.62 or +3.95% to $68.90) posted a solid gain today and rebounded above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($68.27), helping its technical stance improve. During the latest consolidation it stayed above the prior high ($64.80 on 9/14/18) which defines important near-term support to watch.
Volume and volatility often increase near earnings news. Weak action came after recently reporting earnings +5% on +1% sales revenues for the Mar '19 quarter, below the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). That report broke a streak to 8 consecutive quarterly comparisons above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Annual earnings growth was flat in FY '16 but it has otherwise been strong. It still has a 91 Earnings Per Share Rating.
The high-ranked Financial Services - Specialty firm was last shown in this FSU section on 4/24/19 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Negative Reversal After Another New High". It finished strong after was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 9/14/18 high plus 10 cents in the 3/15/19 mid-day report (read here).
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 284 in Jun '17 to 386 in Mar '19, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.5 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. It has Timeliness Rating of A and Sponsorship Rating of C.
