Leadership Helps Indices Show More Technical Progress
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks extended gains Tuesday. The Dow climbed 8 points to 25,891 while the S&P 500 added 4 points to 2,779. The Nasdaq Composite gained 14 points to 7,486. The volume totals reported were lighter than the prior session totals on the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange, as the prior session totals were inflated by options expirations. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by more than a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 57 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made a new 52-week high and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus the total of 54 on the prior session. New 52-week highs totals expanded and solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. The major indices are in a confirmed uptrend (M criteria) while healthy leadership has underpinned the market. The Featured Stocks Page provides the most timely analysis on high-ranked leaders. Charts used courtesy of www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index is still -7.2% below its record high, yet it closed above its 200-day moving average (DMA) line with its recent gains, showing more signs of technical improvement.
The major averages edged higher as investors assessed the latest corporate earnings releases. Trade relations remained in focus as the U.S. and China continued negotiations in Washington D.C. An update from President Trump suggested he may extend the March 1st deadline if talks remain productive. On the data front, the lone economic report showed homebuilder sentiment improved for the second consecutive month in February. Monetary policy will garner attention this week with the Federal Reserve scheduled to publish the minutes from its January meeting tomorrow afternoon.
Nine of 11 S&P 500 sectors finished in positive territory with the Healthcare and Industrial groups the laggards. Consumer Staples outperformed as Walmart (WMT +2.21%) rose after the retail giant posted its strongest holiday quarter in more than a decade. Materials also finished broadly higher led by miner Freeport-McMoRan (FCX +6.60%) rose as a positive outlook on copper prices triggered an analyst upgrade of the company.
Treasuries were stronger with the yield on the 10-year note down two basis points to 2.64%. In commodities, WTI crude added 0.9% to $56.08/barrel. COMEX gold advanced 1.6% to $1,338.70/ounce, the highest level in ten months, amid a weaker dollar.

Gold & Silver Index a Standout Gainer as Financials and Retail Rise
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Financials had a positive bias as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +1.44%) and the Bank Index ($BKX +0.49%) rose, and the Retail Index ($RLX +0.65%) also gave the major indices a boost. The tech sector was mixed as the Biotech Index ($BTK -0.54%) and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.20%) both edged lower, meanwhile the Networking Index ($NWX +0.66%) was higher. Energy-linked groups were mixed as the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.29%) edged lower and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.46%) posted a small gain.
Charts courtesy of www.stockcharts.com

Volume-Driven Gain for New High Close
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
S S & C Technologies Holdings, Inc (SSNC +$0.60 or +1.00% to $60.46) posted a 7th consecutive gain and managed a new high close with today's gain backed by +41% above average volume. It was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 8/03/19 high plus 10 cents in the 2/15/19 mid-day report (read here). No resistance remains due to overhead supply. Subsequent volume-driven gains above the pivot point may be a more convincing new technical buy signal.
Bullish action came last week after it reported earnings +76% on +153% sales revenues for the Dec '18 quarter, marking its 3rd consecutive quarterly comparison above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria), helping it better match the fact-based investment system's fundamental guidelines.
It went through a deep consolidation below its 200 DMA line and rebounded impressively since noted with caution in the 9/07/18 mid-day report. SSNC was last shown in this FSU section on 1/16/14 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Enduring Distributional Pressure While Retreating Near Prior Highs",
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 260 in Dec' 12 to 1,053 in Dec '18, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria of the fact-based investment system. The high-ranked Computer Software - Financial firm completed new Public Offerings in April 2018 and June 2015. It proposed a Secondary Offering on 12/03/18. Secondary Offerings were previously noted 5/09/13, 3/14/13, and on 7/19/12. Such offerings can be a short-term hindrance, however new institutional owners are often attracted when a company has the help of underwriters in placing shares during offerings. It has earned high ranks due to its strong earnings history. The past 3 quarterly comparisons through Dec '18 showed earnings increases above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) for buy candidates. Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has also been very strong. The Computer Software - Financial industry group currently has an A- Rating, and leadership among other individual issues in the group is a reassuring sign.
