Major Averages Rise With Better Volume And Positive Breadth

Volume totals on Monday were reported higher on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE, an encouraging sign that institutional investors were accumulating stocks as the market continued to benefit from pre-election positive momentum. Advancers led decliners by a 3-to-2 ratio on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. New 52-week highs still easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges, and new lows on the NYSE remained in the single digits. There were 105 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, more than doubling the total of 43 issues on the prior session. Of the 34 stocks currently listed on the Featured Stocks Page a total of 9 issues closed Monday above their old 52-week highs.

The US dollar continued its descent after the Group of 20 nations, not surprisingly, failed to agree on specific currency targets. The weaker greenback boosted companies which have more international exports. Higher commodity and energy prices lifted material stocks. Homebuilders and industrial stocks were among the best performers.

Financial shares lagged as questions persisted about banks’ foreclosure practices. Bank of America (BAC -2.4%) is a prime example of a weak bank stock. Meanwhile, CommScope (CTV +30.5%) spiked higher after it confirmed it was in talks to be sold to a private-equity firm. .

Networking Group Leading Strong Tech Sector

The Bank Index ($BKX -1.04%) slumped and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.00%) ended unchanged while most other groups had a positive bias on Monday. Energy-related shares were quiet and the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.01%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.29%) inched higher. Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +1.42%) was among the leading gainers, and small gains for the Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.30%) and Retail Index ($RLX +0.40%) helped the major averages continue to climb. Tech shares were among the best gainers as the Internet Index ($IIX +0.81%), Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.98%), and Semiconductor Index ($SOX +1.08%) posted gains.

Strong Performance Since Returning to Featured Stocks List

Verifone Systems Inc (PAY +$1.29 or +4.11% to $32.68) hit a new 52-week high today, and volume totals have been above average behind 3 of its 4 consecutive gains. It is extended from a sound base pattern, so disciplined investors would avoid chasing it and watch for a secondary buy point to eventually develop. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and recent lows near $27 define chart support. It is up +34.5% from its price when it was featured on 8/25/10 as it blasted higher following better than expected results and was noted in that day's mid-day report (read here) while then rising from a cup-with-handle base.

The downward turn in annual earnings (A criteria, see red circle) was noted as a concern, yet its recent bullish action and accelerating sales revenues growth in recent quarterly comparisons provided reassuring signs. Its last appearance in this FSU section was on 8/30/10 under the headline "Payment Solutions Firm Overcame Previous Setback" as we observed - "It has rebounded impressively and is now clear of overhead supply after a powerful technical breakout with 6 times average volume, however the M criteria is now arguing against new buying efforts until a new follow-through day occurs from at least one of the major averages." The follow-through day arrived on September 1st (read here), confirming the new rally.

The next earlier appearance in this FSU section was a follow-up story that was published on 12/18/08 with an annotated graph under the headline "Patience Did Not Pay; Fundamental Flaws Prompted Technical Gap Down" - that illustrated its decline after it had earlier been dropped from the Featured Stocks page!
