Major Averages Edge Higher While Earnings News Rolls In

The major averaged finished Tuesday's session slightly higher after a gain in the October consumer price index and mixed data on housing. Volume totals were reported mixed, higher on the Nasdaq exchange, and lower on the NYSE versus the prior session totals. Decliners led advancers by an 8-to-7 ratio on the NYSE while the mixed was near even on the Nasdaq exchange. New 52-week highs still easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges. There were 44 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from a total of 105 issues on the prior session. Of the 34 stocks currently listed on the Featured Stocks Page a total of 6 issues closed Tuesday above their old 52-week highs.

Two reports revealed August home prices were slow to recover from depressed levels. A better-than-expected reading of consumer confidence offset some mixed earnings.

Ford Motor Company (F +1.48%) reported better-than-expected earnings. Meanwhile, disappointing numbers from Kimberly-Clark Corporation (KMB -5.81%), and an unexpected loss in the latest quarter for U.S. Steel Corp (X -3.36%) created pressure on stocks. Shares of International Business Machines Corp. (IBM +0.59%) barely inched higher after the firm authorized $10 billion for share repurchases. Results from Coach Inc (COH +11.92%) and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL +14.45%) suggested that consumers are spending for luxury handbags and vacations.

PICTURED: The S&P 600 Small-Cap index lagged the major averages with a small loss today, ending -5.5% off its April 2010 peak. Its 50-day moving average (DMA) line rose above its 200 DMA line, a technical improvement resulting from its recent strength.

Mixed Group Action With No Decisive Moves

The Healthcare Index ($HMO -1.96%) was one of the weakest groups on Tuesday. The Networking Index ($NWX -1.05%) and Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.39%) pulled the tech sector lower while the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.17%) and Internet Index ($IIX +0.78%) posted small gains. The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.44%) fell modestly while the Bank Index ($BKX +0.04%) and Retail Index ($RLX +0.08%) barely ended the day above unchanged. Commodity-linked areas had a slightly positive bias as the Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.92%), Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.12%), and Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.40%) ended slightly higher.

Distributional Action Has Networking Firm Consolidating Above Support

Aruba Networks Inc. (ARUN -$0.04 or -0.20% to $20.24) is consolidating above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and its prior lows noted as an important support to watch. More damaging losses leading to technical violations would raise concerns. Since its last appearance in this FSU section with an annotated graph on 9/02/10 under the headline "High-Ranked Leader Attracting Institutional Interest" its Accumulation/Distribution Rating has fallen from a B to an E (see red circle) after it endured losses with heavier volume indicative of distributional pressure. That raises concerns, however, the number of top-rated funds owning an interest in its shares rose from 45 in Mar '09 to 113 in Sept '10 providing a nice reassurance with respect to the investment system's I criteria. Return On Equity reported at 21% is above the 17% guideline, an encouraging sign. Management's 26% ownership interest keeps the directors' focus on maintaining and growing shareholder value.

Confirming gains and a follow-through day on 9/01/10 (M criteria) helped trigger a technical buy signal after ARUN had returned to the Featured Stocks list as it was highlighted in yellow in the 8/30/10 mid-day report (read here). It rebounded impressively and produced strong quarterly sales revenues and earnings increases in the quarterly reports since it was dropped from the Featured Stocks list in early-May at the time of the "flash crash."

Below is the latest note. I'll add that great group strength in Retail - Restaurants (CMG, BJRI, CAKE) has recently worked to its advantage, but concerns are identified in the latest note published, and I am attaching an annotated graph.

9/20/2010 1:14:13 PM (CANSLIM.net's Mid-Day Breakouts Report) The donut retailer hit another new 52-week high today. Noted in recent mid-day reports - "Annual and quarterly earnings history (C and A criteria) is not meeting the fact-based investment system's guidelines."

Comments : NTES seems to be forming a cup with handle pattern would you mind making a comment on this one

Technically it broke out yesterday from a decent flat base. I see the cup-with-handle you mention, but if anything we should mention that there is overhead supply due to higher trading back in July-October 2009. Earnings deceleration in recent comparisons is a fundamental flaw. It has not been noted since it was dropped from the Featured Stocks list a little more than a year ago, and I'll copy that last note below. Also I am attaching an annotated graph.

10/9/2009 - Gapped down today, falling on more than twice average volume. Based on weak technical action it will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight. On 10/08/09 it triggered a technical sell signal with its loss on above average volume that more decisively violated its 50 DMA line and the upward trendline connecting its July-September chart lows. Subsequent deterioration under its August lows could complete a worrisome "double top" pattern which would have additional bearish implications. Color code was changed to green based on promptly negating its latest breakout and then trading more than -7% below its pivot point.
