Major Averages Endured Distributional Pressure

Behind Monday's losses for the major indices the volume totals were reported higher than the prior trading session's volume total on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, indicating distributional pressure or selling from the institutional crowd. Breadth was negative as decliners led by more than 2-1 on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 59 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down from a total of 62 stocks on the prior session. The list of stocks hitting new 52-week highs easily outnumbered new lows on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. There were gains for only 4 of the 22 high-ranked companies currently included on the Featured Stocks Page.

Stocks fell sharply on Monday's session. The Dow dropped 179 points to 16257. The S&P 500 retreated 23 points to 1,819. The NASDAQ declined 61 points to close at 4,113.

The major averages finished firmly in negative territory following comments from Atlanta Fed President Dennis Lockhart. In a speech providing an update on the economic outlook, Lockhart suggested he would support further tapering of the central bank’s asset purchases this year. Market participants also appeared cautious as earnings season picks up with 29 S&P 500 companies due to report this week.

Shares of JP Morgan (JPM -1.4%) fell ahead its quarterly results tomorrow morning. Lululemon (LULU -16.6%) slumped after the yoga apparel maker reduced its fourth-quarter guidance. All 10 sectors in the S&P 500 were down on today’s session. Energy was the worst performing group. Exxon (XOM -2%) fell as the price of crude oil declined -1.3%. Shares of Beam Inc (BEAM +24.6%) sat out the broader market's pullback. Shares of the spirit maker rallied after Suntory agreed to acquire the company for $16 billion. Merck (MRK +6.5%) on news the drug maker will seek early approval of a new cancer treatment.

Treasuries advanced with the 10-year note gaining 9/32 to yield 2.82%.

Retail Index Violated 50-Day Average for First Time Since October

The Biotechnology Index ($BTK -2.23%) and the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -1.13%) lost ground on Monday while the Networking Index ($NWX +1.00%) rose. Energy-related shares slumped as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -2.04%) and the Oil Services Index ($OSX -1.92%) lost ground. Financial shares also created a drag on the major averages as the Bank Index ($BKX -1.30%) and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -1.22%) fell. Meanwhile, the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +2.32%) posted another solid gain, outpacing growth oriented groups thus far in 2014 following a poor performance last year.

Hit New Highs With 6th Consecutive Gain

Sturm Ruger & Co Inc (RGR +$1.35 or +1.68% to $81.90) hit new highs with today's 6th consecutive gain. The solid gain above its pivot point was backed by +75% above average volume confirming a technical buy signal. It stubbornly held its ground and rallied since highlighted in yellow at $78.87 in the 1/08/14 mid-day report (read here). Pyramiding is a smart tactic taught in the Certification designed to let the market action dictate your entries while proper discipline suggests that gains above a stock's pivot point should have at least +40% above average volume to trigger a valid technical buy signal. Disciplined investors always limit losses if ever any stock falls more than -7% from where it was purchased.

It was last shown in this FSU section on 12/24/12 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Violated 50-Day Average After Damaging Losses Negated Prior Breakout ", triggering a technical sell signal while violating its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and enduring distributional pressure.

It reported earnings +64% on +45% sales revenues for the quarter ended September 30, 2013 versus the year ago period, the 10th consecutive quarterly comparison with a strong earnings increase well above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria) backed by strong sales revenues growth. It also has a good annual earnings (A criteria) history. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 248 in Mar '13 to 272 in Sep '13, a slightly reassuring sign concerning the I criteria.
