Breadth Positive But Volume Lighter Behind Gains
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished higher on Tuesday. The Dow jumped 168 points to 17888. The S&P 500 was up 22 points to 2102. The NASDAQ advanced 47 points to 5156. Volume totals on Tuesday's session were down from Monday's totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was positive as advancers led decliners by more than a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and 4-3 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 70 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, down from 76 on the prior session. There were gains for 6 of the 13 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page. New 52-week highs outnumbered new 52-week lows on both the Nasdaq exchange and the NYSE.
Charts courtesy www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average faces near-term resistance at prior highs while perched -2.5% off its all-time high. It is consolidating above its 50-day and 200-day moving average (DMA) lines.
All three major averages (M criteria) showed impressive strength and recently rebounded above their respective 200 DMA lines while leadership (stocks hitting new highs) improved. New buying efforts may only be considered in stocks meeting all key criteria. The major averages were stronger amid an influx of economic updates. Institute of Supply management manufacturing numbers for November unexpectedly declined, falling to 48.6 versus an expected 50.5. Manufacturing PMI, on the other hand, ticked up to 52.8, from a projected 52.6. A separate release showed construction spending increased by 1% in October, above an expected 0.6% gain. In corporate news, Eli Lilly (LLY +5.4%) while Joy Global (JOY -13.2%) after receiving diverging commentary from sell-side analysts. Amazon.com (AMZN +2.2%) after the online retailer reported record sales of electronic devices over the weekend. American Airlines (AAL +4.8%) rallied on news the company reached a labor agreement with the union of its reservation and gate agents. All ten sectors in the S&P 500 finished higher on Tuesday. Healthcare, financial and tech stocks all increased more than 1% to pace the gains. Treasuries strengthened after the disappointing ISM manufacturing data. The benchmark 10-year note jumped 16/32 to yield 2.15%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude was off 0.2% to $41.56/barrel. COMEX gold added 0.2% to $1068.00/ounce. In FOREX, the dollar retreated against all of its major peers. The Featured Stocks Page saw some new names recently added. Commodity-Linked Groups, Financial, Retail, and Tech Indices Rose
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +3.33%) was a standout gainer on Tuesday and a positive bias in energy-related shares helped the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +1.05%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.43%) post modest gains. The Retail Index ($RLX+1.02%) bounced back and boosted the major averages while the Bank Index ($BKX+1.05%) and the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +1.42%) both were positive influences on the major averages . The Semiconductor Index ($SOX +1.39%) led the tech sector higher while the Networking Index ($NWX +0.88%) and the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.35%) both followed with smaller gains.Charts courtesy www.stockcharts.com
PICTURED: The Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.35%) rebounded above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and above a multi-month downward trendline, but it still remains below its 200 DMA line.

Volume Heavy Behind Breakout Gain
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
L G I Homes Inc (LGIH +$2.28 or +6.86% to $35.54) finished strong after highlighted in yellow with new pivot point based on its 10/21/15 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). It powered to a new 52-week high with today's considerable gain backed +249% above average volume as it triggering a technical buy signal. It found support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line recently as it built an orderly base. Disciplined investors avoid chasing stocks more than +5% above their prior high or pivot point, and in this case the stock quickly spiked beyond its "max buy" level. The Building - Residential / Commercial firm has a limited history since its IPO at $11 on 11/07/13. It reported Sep '15 earnings +124% on +88% sales revenues, showing solid sales revenues acceleration while also marking the 3rd consecutive quarterly comparison above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria). Earnings rose +50% and +53% in Mar and Jun '15 quarters, respectively, both backed by solid sales revenues increases. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 126 in Dec '14 to 154 in Sep '15, a reassuring sign considering the I criteria. Its Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.3 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. It has a Timeliness Rating of A and a Sponsorship Rating of C.
