Major Averages Ended Little Changed
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks were little changed on Tuesday. The Dow gained 6 points to 17489. The S&P 500 slid 2 points to 2050. The NASDAQ added 1 point to 4986. Volume totals were reported higher on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by almost a 2-1 margin on the NYSE and by a narrower 7-6 margin on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 19 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, up from 3 on the prior session. New 52-week lows outnumbered new 52-week highs on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. There were gains for 6 of the 11 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page. PICTURED: The Dow Jones Industrial Average met resistance at its 200-day moving average (DMA) line as it churned higher volume. Losses on higher volume last week led to a slump below its 200-day moving average (DMA) line raising concerns.
The rally came under pressure as the major indices (M criteria) endured distributional pressure last week. All three major averages slumped below their respective 200 DMA lines while leadership (stocks hitting new highs) abruptly contracted. New buying efforts may only be considered in stocks meeting all key criteria. The major averages ran out of steam in afternoon trading amid retail earnings releases and inflation data. A report showed consumer prices rose 0.2% in October, matching consensus estimates. In a separate release, industrial production was down 0.2% in October, missing analyst projections of a 0.1% increase. Manufacturing production, however, eclipsed expectations of a 0.2% advance by increasing 0.4%. On the earnings front, attention was on big-box retailers. Wal-Mart (WMT+ 3.54%) and Home Depot (HD +4.42%) rose after both reported profits above analyst projections. Shares of Dick’s Sporting Goods (DKS -9.43%) fell following disappointing quarterly results and reduced guidance. Urban Outfitters (URBN -3.84%) was lower after reporting lower sales across all brands. Seven out of ten sectors in the S&P 500 finished lower on the session. The healthcare and consumer discretionary sectors paced the gains while utilities and energy shares traded lower. Treasuries turned positive in afternoon trading with the benchmark 10-year note adding 2/32 to yield 2.26%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude fell 2.4% to $40.74/barrel. COMEX gold declined 1.3% to a five-year low of $1069.40/ounce. In Forex, the dollar continued to outperform against the euro The Featured Stocks Page saw some new names recently added. Extended From Prior Base and Perched Near High
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Fleetmatics Group Plc (FLTX +$2.03 or +3.47% to $60.52) rallied for its second-best close with today's gain. Disciplined investors avoid chasing stocks that are extended more than +5% above prior highs from a sound base. Prior highs in the $56 area acted as support during its brief consolidation while it stayed well above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($53.32).
It was last shown in this FSU section on 10/30/15 with an annotated graph under the headline, "Earnings News Due May Contribute to Volatility Next Week". Bullish action followed on 11/04/15 after it reported earnings +41% on +22% sales revenues for the Sep '15 quarter, continuing its strong earnings track record with increases above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria).
The high-ranked Ireland-based Computer Software - Enterprise found support near the 50-day moving average (DMA) line during its earlier consolidation. In the 9/23/15 mid-day report (read here) it was highlighted at $51.26 in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 8/07/15 high plus 10 cents. A volume-driven gain on 10/05/15 triggered a technical buy signal.
The number of top-rated funds owning its share rose from 280 in Dec '14 to 3344 in Sep '15, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.7 is an unbiased indication its shares have been under accumulation over the past 50 days. Its small supply of only 38.6 million shares outstanding (S criteria) can contribute to volatility in the event of any institutional buying or selling.
