Major Averages Fell Yet Healthy Leadership Remains

Stocks pared losses on Thursday. The Dow lost 36 points to 18126. The S&P 500 declined 2 points to 2120. The NASDAQ fell 8 points to 5097. The volume totals were lighter than the prior session total on the Nasdaq exchange and on the NYSE. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by almost a 3-2 margin on the NYSE and by 7-6 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 40 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the BreakOuts Page, matching the prior session total. New 52-week highs expanded and outnumbered new lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 7 of the 13 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.

Concerning the M criteria, stocks have endured distributional pressure after making little headway following the bullish action on 5/14/15 which met the definition of a "follow-through day".  Investors still have a favorable market environment for buying stocks meeting all of the key fundamental and technical criteria, however, any sustained rally requires healthy leadership (more stocks hitting new 52-week highs).

PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index is consolidating near its all-time hig with volume totals recently cooling.

The major averages retreated amid continued Greek debt woes. Economic data was light with jobless claims remaining under 300,000 for the 12th consecutive week. Pending home sales for April topped projections and March’s figure was revised higher. Regional Fed President Williams told investors to expect a gradual rate increase this year.

Seven of 10 S&P 500 sectors finished lower. Industrials were down the most amid weakness in China. Caterpillar (CAT -2.2%) and United Rentals (URI -9.1%) tumbled. Despite a rise in oil prices, energy was another notable underperformer. Chesapeake Energy (CHK -4.8%) and Seadrill (SDRL -6%) sank. In earnings, Abercrombie (ANF +13.5%) rallied after a positive profit tally spurred optimism around the company’s reforms. GoPro (GPRO  +6.6%) rebounded on reports of new drone-oriented products.

U.S. Treasuries finished mixed. Amid a $29 billion auction, the seven-year note was up 3/32 to yield 1.88. The Benchmark 10 year note finished unchanged to yield 2.13%.

In commodities, WTI crude rallied after this afternoon’s inventory report to close up 0.6% to $57.86/barrel. COMEX gold also turned positive and advanced 0.2% to $1188.20/ounce. The Dollar Index gave back gains to finish virtually unchanged. The euro advanced 0.4% to $1.0945/EUR, but the yen fell 0.3% to ¥124.00/USD.

Strong Sales and Earnings Acceleration For Tech Leader

Avago Technologies Ltd (AVGO  +$0.89 or +0.63% to $142.38) was highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 3/23/15 high plus 10 cents in the earlier mid-day report (read here). This Singapore-based Electronics - Semiconductor firm spiked to a new 52-week high on the prior session, technically breaking out of a riskier "late stage" base with a considerable volume-driven gain. It announced plans to acquire Broadcom (BRCM) as mentioned in the 5/27/15 commentary (read here).

The Apr '15 quarter marked its 6th consecutive quarterly earnings increase above the +25% minimum guideline (C criteria). Earnings rose by +29%, +39%, +70%, +124%, +149%, and +151% in the Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct '14, Jan '15, and Apr '15 quarterly comparisons versus the year ago periods, respectively, showing impressive acceleration. Sales revenues rose +23%, 25%, +97%, +115%, +131%, and +130% during that time span. Its annual earnings (A criteria) history has been strong.

AVGO undercut its 50-day moving average (DMA) line then rebounded since noted in the 3/26/15 mid-day report - "Strong earnings making it a better match with the fact-based investment system, however it did not form a sound base. Patient investors may watch for a new base to possibly develop and be noted in the weeks ahead."

The number of top-rated funds owning its share rose from 1137 in Jun '14 to 1457 in Mar '15, a reassuring sign concerning the I criteria.  Leadership in the Semiconductor group is a reassuring sign concerning the L criteria.

The 6-month graph below shows the huge volume behind its breakout gain and additional gain today. The 2-year graph that follows gives investors a look at the ongoing and considerable rally it has enjoyed, during which time it pulled back and tested support at its longer-term 200 DMA line.

Disciplined investors avoid chasing stocks more than +5% above prior highs, and they always limit losses by selling any stock that falls more than -7% from their purchase price.
