Leadership Waned While Major Averages Fell But Recovered From Early Lows
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished lower on Tuesday. The Dow lost 36 points to 18,068. The S&P 500 declined 6 points to 2,099. The NASDAQ slid 17 points to 4,976. The volume totals were reported lighter than the prior session totals on the Nasdaq exchange and higher on the NYSE. Decliners led advancers by a 5-4 margin on the NYSE and by 4-3 on the Nasdaq exchange. Leadership waned as there were 29 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and appeared on the BreakOuts Page, down from the prior session total of 45 stocks. New 52-week lows outnumbered new 52-week highs on the NYSE while the mix was even on the Nasdaq exchange. There were gains for 3 of the 11 high-ranked companies currently on the Featured Stocks Page.
Concerning the M criteria, according to the newspaper the market earned the label of being in a "correction" following Wednesday's action - due to distributional action in the major indices and waning leadership (fewer stocks hitting new 52-week highs). New buying efforts should be avoided until a new confirmed rally with a follow-through day under the guidelines the fact-based investment system.
PICTURED: The Nasdaq Composite Index is consolidating above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and above prior lows defining the next chart support level.
The major averages pared losses on increased M&A activity and higher oil prices. Eight of 10 S&P 500 sectors were down, with materials and tech underperforming. International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF -4.11%) and Rackspace (RAX -13.5%) tumbled after missing quarterly projections and lowering forward guidance. In health care, Eli Lilly (LLY -1.40%) finished lower. Energy companies jumped in sympathy with oil prices. Exxon Mobil (XOM +0.28%) edged higher.
In M&A, Verizon (VZ -0.36%) pulled back after agreeing to acquire AOL (AOL +18.62%) for $4.4 billion. Pall Corp (PLL +19.4%) surged amid speculation the company may have a buyer.
Economic data for April showed a rebound in small business optimism, and a surprisingly large Treasury Department surplus.
Treasuries reversed course as value hunting made the scene. A $24 billion auction of three-year notes drew strong demand, pushing the security up 1/32 to yield 0.98%. The 10-year note gained 6/32 to yield 2.26%.
Commodities were mostly higher. WTI crude rallied 2.1% to $60.50/barrel on a positive DoE outlook. COMEX gold advanced 0.8% to $1192.40/ounce. In FOREX, the dollar ebbed 0.5% with the euro up 0.5% to $1.1214/EUR and the yen 0.2% stronger to ¥119.86/USD

Did Not Trigger New Buy Signal But Found Support Near 50 Day Moving Average
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Ambarella Corporation's (AMBA +$0.94 or +1.31% to $72.78) volume-totals have been below average while consolidating and finding support at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line ($71.73). Subsequent damaging losses leading to violations of the 50 DMA line or prior lows ($68.30 on 4/28/15) would raise concerns and trigger technical sell signals.
On 5/01/15 a new pivot point was cited based on its 3/31/15 high plus 10 cents. Volume-driven gains above the pivot point cited are still needed to trigger a new (or add-on) technical buy signal.
The high-ranked Electronics - Semiconductor firm was last shown in this FSU section on 4/20/15 with annotated graphs under the headline, "Perched at All-Time High, Extended From Prior Base".
It reported earnings increases of +42%, 84%, and +162% in the Jul, Oct '14 and Jan '15 quarterly comparisons versus the year-ago periods, respectively. Sales revenues during that span rose +25%, +43%, and +62%, show impressive sales revenues and earnings acceleration in sequential quarterly comparisons. AMBA's fundamentals match with the fact-based investment system guidelines with quarterly comparisons showing improvement above the +25% minimum earnings guideline (C criteria).
The number of top-rated funds owning its shares has been on the rise, up from 51 in Dec '12 to 237 in Mar '15, a reassuring indication concerning the I criteria. Its current Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.4 is also an unbiased indication its shares have been under slight accumulation over the past 50 days. Its small supply (S criteria) of only 27.6 million shares in the public float can contribute to great price volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.
