Indices' Technical Damage Mounts While Leadership Remains Thin
Kenneth J. Gruneisen - Passed the CAN SLIM® Master's Exam
Stocks finished lower on Thursday. The Dow was down 28 points to 17930. The S&P 500 lost 9 points to 2088 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 47 points to 5058. The S&P 500 Index, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and Nasdaq Composite Index have unanimously slumped below prior lows having the look of a more serious "correction". The volume totals were reported lighter than the prior session total on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange. Breadth was negative as decliners led advancers by 3-2 on the NYSE and nearly 2-1 on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 7 high-ranked companies from the Leaders List that made new 52-week highs and were listed on the BreakOuts Page, versus 5 on the prior session. New 52-week lows solidly outnumbered new 52-week highs on the NYSE and Nasdaq exchange.
PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index met resistance at its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and slumped near its 200 DMA line with 10 losses in the span of 11 sessions.
Recent deterioration in the charts of the major averages (M criteria) and less leadership (fewer stocks hitting new highs) are signs of poor market conditions. Disciplined investors following the fact-based investment system will have a bias toward reducing exposure until recognized strength returns. The Featured Stocks Page lists noteworthy high-ranked leaders.
The S&P 500 declined for an eighth-straight session as investors digested economic updates and looked ahead to tomorrow’s non-farm labor report. On the data front, initial jobless claims came in at 265,000, above the expected 256,000. In separate releases, durable goods orders fell 0.3% while factory orders rose 0.3% in September. Finally, Markit’s survey of U.S. business activity expanded to 54.8 in October.
Eight of 11 sectors in the S&P 500 finished in negative territory. Technology shares underperformed with Facebook (FB -5.7%) gapping down and sinking well below its 50 DMA line after the social media giant warned of slowing revenue growth. Fitbit (FIT -33.57%) gapped down to new lows as the company’s full year guidance fell short of forecasts. First Solar (FSLR -14.96%) also gapped down and fell well below its 50 DMA after being the subject of negative analyst commentary. In the consumer space, Wynn Resorts (WYNN -9.31%) violated its 200 DMA line as the casino operator missed sales estimates. 21st Century Fox (FOX +6.91%) rallied amid strong results at the box office.
Treasuries declined with the benchmark 10-year note down 2/32 to yield 1.80%. In commodities, NYMEX WTI crude lost 1.4% to $44.69/barrel. In FOREX, the British pound surged after a court ruled the government would need parliament to vote on Brexit before beginning the separation process from the European Union.

Y - Wedged to new highs with recent gains lacking great volume conviction. Gains above a stock's pivot point must be backed by at least +40% above average volume to trigger a proper new (or add-on) technical buy signal. Rebounded above its 50 DMA line with volume-driven gains after issuing a Special Dividend effective 10/20/16.

Y - Pulled back on lighter volume today following 2 big volume-driven gains. Highlighted in yellow with pivot point cited based on its 9/20/16 high plus 10 cents in the 10/27/16 mid-day report. Subsequent volume-driven gains for new highs may trigger a technical buy signal following a base-on-base pattern. Found support above prior highs in the $18 area during its quiet consolidation and little resistance remains due to overhead supply.

Reported earnings +86% on +40% sales revenues for the Sep '16 quarter. Failing to rebound today after a gapping down on the prior session violating its 50 DMA line and prior lows triggering a worrisome technical sell signal. Disciplined investors will note that a technical buy signal was not triggered after featured in yellow on 10/18/16. A rebound above its 50 DMA line is needed for its outlook to improve. It will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight.
