Rally Takes A Quiet Timeout Ahead Of Year's Final Trading Session

The December rally took a timeout as the major stock averages closed modestly lower in quiet trading. Investors appeared to lock in some profits following the market's ascent to two-year highs. Thursday's volume totals remained very light and were down slightly from the prior session's quiet totals on both major stock exchanges. Advancing issues beat decliners by 15-14 on the NYSE while declining issues outpaced advancers by 7-6 on the Nasdaq. New 52-week highs solidly outnumbered new 52-week lows on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, and NYSE new lows were in the single digits. A total of 54 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List made new 52-week highs and appeared on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from 49 on the prior session (Note: A correction was made shortly after yesterday's commentary initially incorrectly cited 36 stocks on the Breakouts Page, matching Tuesday's total.) Of the 25 high-ranked leaders currently listed on the Featured Stocks Page, Rovi Corp (ROVI +3.49%) was the best gainer as it hit another new 52-week high with +64% above average volume behind its solid gain.

Thursday's session offered the last economic reports for the year. Reports on business conditions in the Midwest and weekly jobless data all showed improvement. Chicago PMI for December was posted shortly after the open. It improved to a 22-year high of 68.6. Initial jobless claims last week fell below 400,000 level to the lowest level in two years. Homebuilders got a boost from a report that pending home sales rose more than forecast. However, rising mortgage rates remain a concern for the sector, as the average rate on a 30-year fixed loan rose to the highest level in 7 months.

Anadarko Petroleum Corp (APC +6.87%) was a standout gainer on a report that BHP Billiton Limited (BHP +0.11%) would make a $90 bid for the company. Otherwise it was an uneventful session ahead of the final trading day of 2010.

Mixed Group Action Amid Quiet, Indecisive Trading

The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.36%) and Bank Index ($BKX -0.29%) inched lower for a second consecutive session as financial and defensive groups weighed on the major averages. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.66%) and Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.21%) backpedaled. The Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.52%) posted a modest gain while the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.04%) ended flat. The Retail Index ($RLX +0.06%) and Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.04%) were virtually unchanged while the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.27%) and Networking Index ($NWX +0.32%) posted small gains and the Internet Index ($IIX -0.19%) inched lower.

PICTURED: The Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.21%) has been recently consolidating near its 2010 highs. Healthcare stocks are considered a "defensive" group and they typically have shown great relative strength during times of economic uncertainty, however the year-to-date gains for the group have not made it a standout.

Perched At 50-Day Moving Average Line While Quietly Consolidating

Fifty One Job Inc Ads (JOBS -$0.49 or -1.00% to $48.61) has been consolidating for the past 3 weeks after recently challenging its all-time high near $55 from 2004. It has recently been perched just above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line with volume totals cooling, but it has not formed a sound new base. more damaging losses could raise concerns and trigger technical sell signals.

The 4 latest quarterly comparisons show good sales growth and earnings improvement better than the +25% guideline, but its annual earnings history (A criteria) has been below strict guidelines of the fact-based investment system because of the downturn in its FY '08 earnings (see red oval). Regular readers may note that prior mid-day report appearances for JOBS this year included cautionary remarks concerning its fundamentals, however it stronger sales growth in recent comparisons was a very reassuring sign. The number of top-rated funds owning its shares rose from 39 in Mar '10 to 49 in Sept '10, a reassuring sign with respect to the I criteria. Its small supply (S criteria) of only 28 million shares outstanding could contribute to greater volatility in the event of institutional buying or selling.

When it made its last appearance in this FSU section on 11/16/10 with an annotated graph under the headline "Distributional Pressure After Great Progress During Latest Rally" it had suffered damage due to distribution and violated a previously noted upward trendline connecting its July-November lows, raising concerns. Afterward it stayed well above its 50 DMA line and made additional progress to new highs. It traded as much as +75.7% higher from $31.59 when noted in yellow in the 9/16/10 mid-day report rising from a short flat base to a new 52-week high and within a penny of its 2006 high.
