Major Averages Rally Decisively For New 2010 Highs

The Dow Jones industrial Average enjoyed its best day in two months while it rallied to its highest level since the 2008 bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers. Volume totals were reported higher on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange, a sign of institutional accumulation. Advancers led decliners on the NYSE by about a 5-to-1 ratio and by a 3-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq exchange. There were 188 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, marking a great expansion from the total of 68 issues on the prior session. New 52-week highs are easily outnumbering new 52-week lows on both exchanges.

The broad rally sent the S&P 500 Index close to a two-year high after the Fed’s new round of quantitative easing encouraged prospects for economic growth. Markets around the world embraced the Federal Reserve’s $600 billion plan to stimulate the economy. U.S. stocks got an extra lift when the White House said President Obama was open to the idea of extending Bush tax cuts due to expire at the end of the year. Financial stocks reacted positively after a report the Federal Reserve may allow strong banks to increase dividends.

Two economic reports delivered mixed results. Third quarter non-farm productivity rose more than expected as labor costs fell. Initial jobless claims increased more than forecast, suggesting the labor market remains weak. The next important event for the market will be tomorrow morning’s employment report from the Labor Department.

Mining and energy shares enjoyed the benefits of rising commodity prices. Gold closed at a record, silver climbed to a 30-year high, and oil finished at a six-month high, while the dollar fell to a nine-month low against the euro.

Among the 34 high-ranked stocks currently listed on the Featured Stocks Page, the biggest gainer was Silver Wheaton Corp (SLW +8.75%), which gapped up today for a new all-time high. This high-ranked leader has been recently noted as "One of the strongest names in the Mining - Gold/Silver/Gems group currently included on the Featured Stocks list."

Improved earnings and surprising October sales at retailers added to the good mood, and winners included Whole Foods Markets (WFMI +15%), Qualcomm Inc (QCOM +5.8%). Gap Inc (GPS +6.1%) and Macy’s Inc (M +6.6%). Meanwhile, Dow component Boeing Co (BA +2.77%) rose as mechanical problems were investigated on jumbo jets manufactured by European competitor Airbus.

Financial And Commodity-Linked Groups Among Leading Gainers

Financial shares played a part in underpinning the major averages rally on Thursday as the Bank Index ($BKX +3.61%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +2.86%) tallied solid gains. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX +3.16%) led the tech sector while the Internet Index ($IIX +1.01%) and Networking Index ($NWX +0.30%) posted smaller gains. Energy-related stocks were solid gainers as the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +2.91%) and Oil Services Index ($OSX +3.09%) surged higher. The Retail Index ($RLX +1.71%) and Healthcare Index ($HMO +1.06%) also posted gains, while the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.59%) was the only regularly followed index in this report that ended with a loss.

Technically Strong Although Earnings Growth Missed Guideline

Under Armour, Inc. (UA +$2.06 or +4.44% to $48.49) posted a gain on average volume today for a new high close. Since its last appearance in this FSU section with an annotated graph on 9/09/10 under the headline "Finished Below Pivot Point Near Middle Of Intra-day Range" it produced a streak of many consecutive gains, then worked its way higher in recent weeks without forming a sound new base. While technically strong, it deserves the benefit of the doubt, especially with a favorable backdrop from the M criteria currently favoring 3 out of 4 growth stocks. Its quarterly and annual earnings track record has some fundamental flaws with respect to the fact-based investment system. The weaker earnings increase (under the +25% guideline) in the latest quarter ended September 30, 2010 raised concerns, fundamentally, with respect to the C criteria. Earlier notes acknowledged the downward turn in annual earnings (A criteria) in FY '08, another fundamental concern with respect to the fact-based investment system. Keep in mind that UA was long ago dropped from the CANSLIM.net Featured Stocks list on 5/04/07 and it subsequently fell from $44.50 to as low as $11.94 before rebounding impressively.
