Holding its ground today after a gap up on the prior session for yet another new all-time high after reporting very strong earnings +122% on +82% sales revenues for the quarter ended June 30, 2011 versus the year ago period. With the second largest market cap of all publicly traded firms, AAPL does not fit the mold of a small growth firm unknown by the institutional crowd. It has a stellar earnings track record that solidly satisfies the C and A criteria. After its last appearance on 8/09/10 in the Featured Stock Update section (with detailed notes and an annotated graph) it was noted in multiple mid-day reports through 2010 as it rallied to new all-time highs, and it was also noted a handful of times earlier this year.

Hovering near its 52-week high today with no resistance remaining due to overhead supply. Stubbornly held its ground forming a base on base type pattern following its 6/23/11 technical breakout. Prior mid-day reports repeatedly noted - "Recent quarterly comparisons show sales revenues and earnings improving after a streak of negative comparisons after a downturn and loss in FY '09. Erratic earnings history makes it, fundamentally, below the investment system guidelines."

Found support near prior highs during its consolidation since last noted in the 7/06/11 mid-day report - "Extended from a sound base, yet it faces no resistance due to overhead supply. Strength in education-related stocks is a nice reassurance concerning the L criteria. Pulling back today after gains with above average volume this week helped it rally further above prior resistance. Churned above average volume while not making meaningful price progress, a sign of distributional pressure, yet stubbornly holding its ground since its 7/13/11 gap up and volume-driven gain for new 52-week and all-time highs. Technically, it formed an orderly cup-with handle type base pattern and it has been trading just above prior stubborn resistance in the $24 area. The number of top-rated funds (the I criteria) owning its shares fell from 242 in Dec '10 to 228 in Mar '11, but the numbers had previously been on the rise. Prior mid-day reports noted - "Found support near prior lows in the $20 area and stayed well above its 200 DMA line during its orderly consolidation since reaching its all-time high in April. Recent quarterly comparisons showed greatly improved sales revenues and earnings but its annual earnings history (A criteria) has not been showing steady strong growth."

Wide intra-day range today after reporting earnings +14% on +4% sales revenues for the quarter ended June 30, 2011 versus the year ago period, not a good match, fundamentally, with the investment system's winning models. Perched at its all-time high, rebounding promptly following a gap down today. The 7/06/11 mid-day report noted - "It went through a long consolidation and traded below its 200 DMA line in the interim since last noted in the 10/15/10 mid-day report - 'Not near a sound base, yet no resistance remains due to overhead supply. It and similar players in the auto-repair arena have shown recent strength while consumers are fixing their old cars and holding off on new car purchases. Earnings and sales revenues increases have been much stronger in recent quarterly comparisons. While the C criteria may be sufficiently satisfied, its annual earnings (A criteria) growth rate has been not especially strong. Additionally, in 6 of its 8 most recent quarterly earnings comparisons there are blue triangles beside the earnings figure on the chart service used by our experts - which indicates pre-tax, non-recurring items were included (where possible, such items are normally removed to provide data better suited for comparison).'"

Its FY '09 and FY '10 earnings dipped after showing great annual earnings growth in prior years, yet recent quarterly comparisons have show strong sales revenues increases and good earnings growth following a streak of negative comparisons.
