Dow Flirts With April Highs But Lacking Great Conviction

The Dow was up as many as 72 points in the first half hour and traded above the April 26th high close of 2010, then ended with a smaller gain. Compared to Wednesday's session totals, volume totals on Thursday were reported mixed, higher on the Nasdaq exchange and lower on the NYSE. The decliners outnumbered advancers by a 3-to-2 ratio on the Nasdaq exchange while on the NYSE the mix was very close to even. New 52-week highs still easily outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges, and new lows on the NYSE remained in the single digits. There were 56 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the total of 39 issues that hit the BreakOuts Page on the prior session.

A report on initial jobless claims remained at levels showing little improvement in the labor market. New claims fell 23,000 to 452,000 in the latest week. That total remains well above levels that would suggest companies are hiring. Two more economic reports were released at 10 AM Eastern. The October Philadelphia Fed factory index expanded for the first time in three months, although it was less than expected. September leading economic indicators rose for the third straight month. The market also got a mid-day boost after the president of the St. Louis Federal Reserve suggested the central bank could announce Treasury purchases at its November meeting.

A slump in commodity producers offset positive earnings news as a rebound in the dollar weighed on gold and oil prices. Netflix Inc. (NFLX +12.76%) was among the session's standout gainers as the longtime resident on the Featured Stocks Page blasted higher following another strong earnings report. Household names and Dow components, McDonald's (MCD +1.33%) and Caterpillar (CAT -1.24%), beat expectations but ended with mixed results and very little net change. Freeport McMoran Copper and Gold (FCX +1.13%) also rose modestly after profits topped estimates.

PICTURED: The S&P 500 Index is perched -3.2% off its April 2010 high and its 50-day and 200-day moving average (DMA) lines have converged.

Retail And Internet Indexes Posted Standout Gains

The Internet Index ($IIX +1.04%) and Retail Index ($RLX +1.19%) were standout gainers on Thursday. Commodity-linked groups and other defensive areas pulled back as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -1.16%), Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.70%), Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -0.39%), and Healthcare Index ($HMO -0.61%) finished the session with modest losses. The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.78%) also created a drag on the major averages. A slight negative bias led to small losses in tech sector including the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.55%), Networking Index ($NWX -0.21%), and Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.10%).

Volume Totals Cooling While Perched At Historic Highs

Vanceinfo Tech Inc Ads (VIT -$0.51 or -1.48% to $33.84) quietly touched a new high today then reversed into the red. Volume totals have cooled while recently consolidating near all-time highs, which suggests that few investors are anxious to head for the exits. It has not formed a recent sound base pattern, but patient investors may watch for it to eventually offer an ideal add-on buy point. Meanwhile, its 50-day moving average (DMA) line and recent lows near $26.50 define important chart support to watch.

No resistance remains due to overhead supply, making it easy for it to continue rallying. This China-based Computer - Tech Services firm is an ideal candidate for investors' watchlists, while disciplined investors will wait until a new base forms. The market scored a solid follow-through day (FTD) with big gains for the major averages satisfying the M criteria immediately following its last appearance in this FSU section on 8/31/10 under the headline "Tech Services Firm Rising With Above Average Volume".
