Earnings News Inspires Solid Gains While Volume Totals Cool

Lighter volume totals on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange marked a reversal of fortune on Wall Street, as the Dow recovered much of Tuesday’s sell-off. The Dow rose as many as 174 points before closing up 129 points at 11,107. Compared to Tuesday's session totals, lighter totals on Wednesday showed a lack of great buying demand from the institutional crowd after the market's latest bout of distribution. There were 39 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the total of 15 issues that hit the BreakOuts Page on the prior session. The NYSE saw advancers lead decliners by about a 3-to-1 ratio while the Nasdaq exchange totals were tilted about 2-to-1 in favor of advancers. New 52-week highs still outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges, and new lows on the NYSE remained in the single digits.

Earnings news was a catalyst as the latest batch of corporate reports boosted confidence. Yahoo Inc (YHOO +2.1%) beat estimates and Boeing Co (BA +3.3%) beat estimates. Airline stocks were inspired to gain altitude after Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL +10.8%) beat estimates and American Airlines parent AMR Corp (AMR +12.6%) posted its first profit in seven quarters. Eli Lilly & Co (LLY -3.8%) slumped after the company failed to win approval for a weekly diabetes drug.

The dollar was lower against major currencies. Crude oil jumped more than $2 a barrel, pushing energy stocks higher. The Federal Reserve’s regional survey did nothing to dispel expectations that the Fed will engage in another round of asset buying. The Beige Book report showed the U.S. economy expanded at only a modest pace in September and showed few signs of accelerating.

While many leading stocks have recently been pausing to consolidate their prior gains, very few Featured Stocks have broken down versus those that are working. Volume and volatility typically increase during earnings season. Be sure to check "News" links for headlines and be watching for notes concerning when companies will be reporting results for the latest quarter. Always employ proper discipline by not chasing extended stocks and never holding losses that grow larger than -7-8%, per the fact-based system's guidelines.

Biotech Index Slumped, Lagging Other Groups

Modest gains from the Retail Index ($RLX +0.86%) and financial stocks underpinned the rally on Wednesday as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.95%) and Bank Index ($BKX -0.50%) tallied small gains. The Commodity-linked groups rose as the Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +1.72%), Oil Services Index ($OSX +1.07%), and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +1.32%) gained more than +1% each. There were solid gains for the Networking Index ($NWX +1.92%) and Internet Index ($IIX +1.15%), with a smaller gain for the Semiconductor Index ($SOX +0.62%). The Healthcare Index ($HMO +2.15%) spurted higher, but the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -1.25%) was a laggard for the session as it ended in the red.

Consolidating After Solid Gains Since Featured Early This Year

Rovi Corp (ROVI +$0.46 or +0.94% to $49.47) posted a small gain today on lighter volume. It had finished in the upper third of its intra-day range on the prior session after briefly trading under its 10/07/10 low. Its short-term average served as support since its last appearance in this FSU section on 8/24/10 under the headline "Near 50 DMA and Important Support After Loss On Heavy Volume" after sinking near its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. A single close below that important short-term average on 9/17/10 was promptly followed by a big gap up gain with 5.3 million shares. That "breakaway gap" was a sign of hearty buying demand from the institutional crowd (I criteria) as it blasted to a new 52-week high (N criteria) and confirmed a new technical buy signal.

ROVI has traded up more than +47% since first featured on 2/25/10 (read here), after building long base-on-base type patterns. Prior resistance in the $45 area and its 50 DMA line define important support to watch now. Violations may trigger technical sell signals and prompt investors to limit losses or lock in profits. Meanwhile, if it continues its healthy consolidation another sound new base may form and offer another opportunity to accumulate shares without chasing it too far above prior chart highs.
