China's Interest Rate Increase Surprises Investors

There were only 15 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, down considerably from the total of 83 issues that hit the BreakOuts Page on the prior session. Leadership waned as the major averages suffered their worst day since August 11th and ended unanimously lower with the volume totals increasing on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange compared to Monday's session totals. The action was clearly distributional as the NYSE and Nasdaq exchange both saw decliners outnumber advancers by about a 5-to-1 ratio. New 52-week highs still outnumbered new 52-week lows on both exchanges, and new lows on the NYSE remained in the single digits.

Commodities plunged and the US dollar rallied as China boosted interest rates in a surprise move to curb inflation. Oil dropped below $80 a barrel and gold fell the most since July. Many companies from the Mining - Gold/Silver/Gems group and energy stocks led a sharp sell-off on Wall Street.

Mixed earnings reports gave investors a reason to take some profits from a rally this month that pushed the major averages to five-month highs. Apple Inc (AAPL -2.68%) pulled back but ended well above the session low after its latest results. Bank of America (BAC -4.38%) slumped on reports that a bondholder group was seeking to force the bank to buy back some bad mortgages that were packaged into bonds. IBM (-3.4%) disappointed on contract signings, finishing in the red.

While many leading stocks have recently been pausing to consolidate their prior gains, very few Featured Stocks have broken down versus those that are working. Volume and volatility typically increase during earnings season. Be sure to check "News" links for headlines and be watching for notes concerning when companies will be reporting results for the latest quarter. Always employ proper discipline by not chasing extended stocks and never holding losses that grow larger than -7-8%, per the fact-based system's guidelines.

Commodity-Linked Groups Among Session's Harder Hit Areas

The Bank Index ($BKX -1.20%) and Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.76%) showed better resilience but ended lower on Tuesday amid widespread weakness. The Retail Index ($RLX -1.69%) also created a drag on the major averages. Commodity-linked groups were some of the hardest hit as the US dollar rallied, pressuring the Oil Services Index ($OSX -3.18%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI -2.89%) lower. The Healthcare Index ($HMO -2.94%) also backpedaled. Tech shares had a negative bias as the Networking Index ($NWX -2.77%), Biotechnology Index ($BTK -2.14%), Internet Index ($IIX -1.75%), and Semiconductor Index ($SOX -1.40%) ended unanimously lower.

Deterioration Continues Following +41% Rally In Under 5 Months

Mercadolibre Inc (MELI -$2.29 or -3.64% to $60.65) gapped down today for another damaging loss with above average volume, closing more than -21% off its 52-week high after finishing below its low close of 8/25/10 on the prior session. It may test support at its long-term 200-day moving average (DMA) line, the long-term average which acted as a firm support level in the early part of the year. Meanwhile, a rebound above its 50 DMA line is needed for its outlook to improve. Based on weakness and technical deterioration it will be dropped from the Featured Stocks list tonight.

It endured damaging distributional pressure in recent weeks as a violation of its 50 DMA line triggered an earlier technical sell signal. The Latin American Internet - eCommerce firm was first featured in yellow in the 5/13/10 mid-day report (read here) and then noted as it traded within 5 cents of its 52-week high. It proceeded to rally as much as +41.7%, rising from $54.21 to as high as $76.81 in the span of less than 5 months. Its strong quarterly earnings and annual earnings history satisfy the C and A criteria. Top-rated funds owning an interest slumped from 94 in Jun '10 to 87 in Sep '10, which is a slightly discouraging sign concerning the I criteria.
