Major Averages Rise With Less Volume Behind Gains

There were 83 high-ranked companies from the CANSLIM.net Leaders List making new 52-week highs and appearing on the CANSLIM.net BreakOuts Page, up from the total of 64 issues that hit the BreakOuts Page on Friday. The major averages ended unanimously higher but with volume totals reported lighter on the NYSE and on the Nasdaq exchange compared to Friday's session totals. The NYSE and Nasdaq exchange both saw advancers outnumber decliners by almost a 2-to-1 ratio. New 52-week highs continually are outnumbering new 52-week lows on both exchanges in recent weeks, and new lows on the NYSE have been in the single digits.

An index of homebuilder confidence rose to a 4-month high, but a report on industrial production was weaker than expected, adding to expectations the Fed will proceed with asset purchases. Industrial production declined -0.2% in September. In merger news, Northeast Utilities (NU -0.91%) agreed to combine with NSTAR (NST -0.58%) to create New England’s largest utility company.

Better-than-expected earnings by Citigroup Inc (C +5.57%) helped financial shares bounce back from a worrisome streak of losses last week. Twelve of the Dow Industrial stocks are scheduled to report earnings this week, including International Business Machines Corp (IBM +1.25%), which reported after Monday's close. Apple Inc (AAPL +1.04%) also reported its latest results and was down in after-hours trading.

While many leading stocks have recently been pausing to consolidate their prior gains, very few Featured Stocks have broken down versus those that are working. Volume and volatility typically increase during earnings season. Be sure to check "News" links for headlines and be watching for notes concerning when companies will be reporting results for the latest quarter. Always employ proper discipline by not chasing extended stocks and never holding losses that grow larger than -7-8%, per the fact-based system's guidelines.

Bank Index Rallied Back Above 50-Day Average

Financial shares' positive bias on Monday was an encouraging sign as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +2.04%) and Bank Index ($BKX +2.98%) helped to underpin the major averages' gains. While the Networking Index ($NWX +0.48%) and Biotechnology Index ($BTK +1.06%) tallied gains, the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.71%) retreated and the Internet Index ($IIX -0.18%) ended with a small loss. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU -0.54%) and the Retail Index ($RLX -0.46%) created a slight drag on the major averages with their mildly negative bias. The Healthcare Index ($HMO +0.67%) continued trading with a positive bias while mixed action in energy-related shares helped the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +1.07%) rally while the Oil Services Index ($OSX -0.33%) edged lower.

New High Close For High-Ranked Mining - Gold/Silver/Gems Leader

There are a few high-ranked leaders hailing from the Mining - Gold/Silver/Gems industry group which are currently included on the Featured Stocks page based on fundamental and technical strength. Current leadership in the group (L criteria) is helping many firms in the group show strength. They are ideal candidates for investors' watch lists as the broader market continues its rally. If they produce sound new bases and bullish breakouts confirming that they are attracting great institutional (I criteria) demand, some of these leaders are capable of substantial sustained advances. Meanwhile, patience and good discipline are critical.

Silver Wheaton Corp (SLW +$0.20 or +0.72% to $27.90) posted a small gain today with near average volume for a new all-time high close. Since it was last shown in this FSU section on 8/25/10 with an annotated graph under the headline "Another High-Ranked Mining Firm Perched Near Highs" it has steadily risen +30%. This Canada-based firm in the Mining - Gold/Silver/Gems industry had a downward turn in FY '08 earnings (A criteria has been noted as a concern, see red circle). Its 4 latest quarterly comparisons showed solid sales and earnings increases (good C criteria) after 4 prior reports with negative comparisons versus the year ago period. Its Up/Down Volume Ratio of 1.9 indicates that it has recently been under accumulation and on the rise due to institutional (I criteria) buying demand. It is extended from an ideal buy point, so patient investors may be wise to wait until a secondary buy point develops before making initial or add-on buying efforts.
